Three years had passed since the weight of the elders' expectations first began pressing on Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's marriage. In the halls of Cloud Recesses, time moved slowly, the serene stillness of the mountains masking the changes happening in their lives.
At sixteen, Wei Wuxian had grown taller, leaner, and the once-childish features of his face had begun to sharpen into those of a young man. But despite his changing appearance, his mischievous spirit remained intact - at least on the surface. Inside, however, the echoes of the insecurities planted by the elders still lingered, though Lan Wangji's constant support had softened them over time.
What troubled Wei Wuxian now was something different, something unfamiliar. His body, once gangly and awkward, now moved with more purpose, his muscles stronger, his voice deeper. It was a new feeling of restlessness that he didn't quite understand, an unease that settled beneath his skin. And, more confusing than that, was the way his heart sped up when Lan Wangji was near. He often felt a warmth spread across his skin when Lan Wangji touched him - even in the most casual of ways.
For Lan Wangji, these years had also brought changes, though his were far more internal. His once steadfast self-control, a foundation of his identity, had begun to crack. The attraction and love he felt for Wei Wuxian had deepened with time, but as Wei Wuxian matured into adulthood, it became harder for Lan Wangji to maintain the careful distance he had always upheld.
Wei Wuxian's boyishness was fading, and in its place was a young man with a sharp wit and a beautiful, lithe form that Lan Wangji found increasingly difficult to ignore. But Lan Wangji was nothing if not disciplined. He kept his desires in check, pushing aside the growing ache inside him.
Still, there were moments when his resolve was tested.

One Summer Afternoon
It was a warm afternoon in the Cloud Recesses. The air was thick with the scent of jasmine, and the soft rustling of leaves was the only sound as Wei Wuxian sat beneath a shaded pavilion, working on a calligraphy assignment that Lan Wangji had insisted he practice. His robes were looser than usual, a simple linen set meant for the hot weather, and the gentle breeze made the fabric shift with his every movement, revealing glimpses of skin along his neck and arms.
Lan Wangji, ever the diligent husband, had been sitting nearby, watching as Wei Wuxian worked. His gaze had, at first, been focused on the neat lines of characters Wei Wuxian was slowly forming. But over time, his attention drifted to the way the sunlight danced across Wei Wuxian's exposed skin, how his lips pressed together in concentration, and the subtle curve of his throat as he tilted his head.
A strange heat began to build in Lan Wangji's chest. He tried to focus on his breathing, tried to steady the thoughts that were creeping into his mind, but the sight of Wei Wuxian - so unguarded, so utterly oblivious to the effect he had - was proving to be too much.
Wei Wuxian, for his part, was equally unaware of the tension in the air. His brow furrowed as he messed up another stroke, grumbling under his breath. "This is too hard, Lan Zhan. You're making me do this on purpose, aren't you?"
Lan Wangji cleared his throat, his voice soft but strained. "You must practice."
Wei Wuxian sighed dramatically, tossing the brush aside and turning to face Lan Wangji with an exaggerated pout. "It's not fair! You're too good at everything. I'm just... useless."
Lan Wangji's chest tightened. "You are not useless."
Wei Wuxian blinked, surprised by the firmness in Lan Wangji's tone. His heart fluttered, though he couldn't quite place why. "Well... I mean, I'm not as good as you at all this boring stuff." He gestured to the scattered calligraphy papers with a grin. "But I'm fun, right?"
