The days in the Cloud Recesses began to blur into a series of lessons, meditations, and endless rules, but Wei Wuxian, ever the lively twelve-year-old, found it increasingly difficult to conform to the restrictive environment. He was used to the spirited freedom of Lotus Pier, where laughter was loud, the rules were few, and his days were filled with adventure. Here, the quiet seemed to weigh heavily on him, like a blanket of mist that he could not shake off.
Yet, despite the quiet, Wei Wuxian's mischievous spirit remained undiminished. Every morning, as he trudged to the meditation hall, he would spot Lan Wangji at the front, his posture perfect, his expression serene. Wei Wuxian, however, found it impossible to sit still for more than a few moments. He fidgeted, hummed under his breath, and sometimes even whispered jokes to the disciple next to him, earning him countless glares and reprimands.
**A Test of Patience**
One day, during a particularly quiet meditation session, Wei Wuxian couldn't resist any longer. He leaned over to the disciple beside him, a young boy named Lan Yuan, and whispered, "Hey, do you think if I sat still long enough, I'd turn into a stone statue like Lan Zhan?"
Lan Yuan's eyes widened in horror at the blasphemous joke, but a small, involuntary giggle escaped his lips. The sound, though barely audible, cut through the silence like a knife. Several disciples shot them warning looks, and Lan Qiren's eyes snapped open. He glared directly at Wei Wuxian, who quickly straightened his posture, trying to look innocent.
"Wei Wuxian," Lan Qiren's voice was sharp, echoing in the quiet hall. "Do you find our meditations amusing?"
Wei Wuxian put on his best, wide-eyed expression. "No, Lan Qiren-xiansheng. I was just... breathing too loudly. Sorry."
Lan Qiren's frown deepened, and he turned back to his own meditation, though his stern gaze lingered on Wei Wuxian for a moment longer. Wei Wuxian could feel Lan Wangji's eyes on him, too, but he dared not turn around.
When the session finally ended, Lan Wangji approached him, his expression serious. "Wei Ying," he said in a low voice, "you must try harder. Meditation is essential to inner peace and clarity. It is not a time for jokes."
Wei Wuxian pouted slightly, crossing his arms over his chest. "But Lan Zhan, it's so boring! My legs fall asleep, and my mind starts wandering. I can't help it!"
Lan Wangji's face remained impassive, but his tone softened just a fraction. "If you wish to improve, you must be patient. Discipline is not easy, but it is necessary."
Wei Wuxian looked up at him, his bright eyes wide with curiosity. "Do you really believe that, Lan Zhan? That everything has to be so serious all the time?"
Lan Wangji hesitated, caught off guard by the sincerity in Wei Wuxian's question. "Yes," he finally replied. "Some things must be taken seriously."
Wei Wuxian grinned. "Well, maybe I can find a way to make it more fun! How about a challenge? If I can sit still for an entire session, you have to teach me one of your secret techniques. Deal?"
Lan Wangji's lips pressed together in a thin line, but he nodded. "Very well. But if you fail, you will copy the Lan Sect's rules ten times."
Wei Wuxian's eyes sparkled with mischief. "Deal!"
**A Series of Mishaps**
Despite his best efforts, Wei Wuxian found the challenge harder than he had anticipated. The next morning, he tried to sit perfectly still, repeating to himself over and over again that he would win this challenge and finally see Lan Zhan show him something new and exciting. But no sooner had he closed his eyes than his nose began to itch. He tried to ignore it, scrunching his face slightly, but it only seemed to get worse. He twitched, shifted, and finally, without thinking, reached up to scratch.
