Wei Wuxian took a deep breath, trying to still the rapid thudding of his heart. The hall seemed even quieter than before, the air thick with anticipation. He could feel dozens of eyes on him, watching, waiting. He glanced at Lan Wangji, who stood beside him like an unmovable mountain, his expression calm and composed.
Lan Qiren held up the red ceremonial ribbons — long, flowing pieces of silk that seemed to shimmer in the soft light of the lanterns. “Wei-gongzi, Lan Wangji,” he intoned with solemnity, “the red ribbon represents the bond that will tie your fates together from this day forward. Are you prepared to accept this bond, with all the responsibilities and joys it may bring?”
Wei Wuxian felt a lump in his throat. He wasn’t sure if he was ready, but he knew he had come this far, and there was no turning back now. He glanced at Lan Wangji again, and their eyes met. In that moment, all the noise in his head seemed to fade away. He saw only Lan Wangji’s steady gaze, his calm assurance, and felt a flicker of determination.
“Yes,” Wei Wuxian replied, his voice louder than he expected. “I am ready.”
Lan Wangji nodded, his voice steady. “I am ready as well.”
Lan Qiren nodded approvingly, and with a flick of his wrist, he began to wrap the red ribbons around their joined hands, binding them together. The silk felt cool and smooth against Wei Wuxian’s skin, the fabric gliding gently as it looped over their wrists.
“This ribbon signifies the intertwining of your lives,” Lan Qiren continued, his tone measured and dignified. “From this day forward, you will share in each other's triumphs and burdens. You will face all things together.”
Wei Wuxian’s heart beat faster, but there was a calmness that settled over him too. He felt the weight of Lan Wangji’s gaze, unwavering and firm. He found himself feeling less afraid and more grounded, as if Lan Wangji’s steady presence was all he needed to remind him that he wouldn’t be alone.
**The Vows of Promise**
Lan Xichen stepped forward next, holding a small silver bowl filled with clear water, glimmering under the lantern light. “Now, you will both take a sip from this bowl,” he instructed gently. “The water represents purity and clarity of intention, a symbol that your union will be built on honesty and mutual understanding.”
Wei Wuxian took the bowl first, his hand shaking slightly as he lifted it to his lips. The cool water slipped down his throat, bringing with it a wave of calm. He handed the bowl to Lan Wangji, who accepted it with both hands, his movements precise and deliberate. Lan Wangji took a sip, his expression serene.
Lan Xichen then took the bowl from Lan Wangji and set it aside. “Now, speak your vows,” he prompted, his tone gentle. “Speak from the heart, and know that these words will bind you more than any ribbon could.”
Wei Wuxian blinked, suddenly feeling the weight of the moment pressing down on him. What was he supposed to say? He hadn’t really thought about vows. He looked over at Lan Wangji, hoping for some clue, but Lan Wangji remained quiet, waiting.
Wei Wuxian took a deep breath, his mind racing. Finally, he spoke, the words coming out more naturally than he expected. “Lan Zhan,” he began, his voice quieter now, but firm. “I don’t know what the future holds for us, but… I promise to always be honest with you. I promise to try to understand you, even when it’s hard. And I promise… to make you smile, at least once every day.”
A soft murmur of surprise rippled through the crowd at his vow, but Wei Wuxian didn’t mind. He felt his cheeks warm, but he kept his gaze on Lan Wangji, who was watching him intently, his expression unreadable.
