The tension between them had eased in the days following the confrontation with the elder, but the lingering effects still cast a shadow over their lives. Wei Wuxian could feel it in the way Lan Wangji's eyes followed him, always watchful, always protective. There was a quiet determination in his gaze, a vow unspoken but understood. He would not allow anyone to come between them again.
But the elder's words had planted a seed of doubt in Wei Wuxian's heart, one that had taken root and begun to grow, spreading its tendrils through his thoughts. The talk of heirs, of duty, of what was expected of them as a married couple, had struck a chord he hadn't fully acknowledged before. He was only sixteen now, but even he knew that in the eyes of the clan, he should have already produced an heir.
Lan Wangji's silent refusal to even speak of it left Wei Wuxian feeling adrift, unsure of his place in the marriage. Did Lan Wangji not want an heir with him? Was he somehow lacking, or was there something else that held Lan Wangji back?
These thoughts haunted Wei Wuxian as he wandered the quiet paths of the Cloud Recesses, his mind replaying the elder's harsh words. The Lan Clan disciples greeted him respectfully, but he could feel their eyes on him, could hear the whispers that followed in his wake. The rumors had spread, as they always did, twisting the truth until it became something ugly and poisonous.
He had heard them, the hushed voices of the juniors and even some of the older disciples, questioning his place in the Lan Clan, questioning his ability to fulfill his duties as Lan Wangji's spouse. It stung more than he cared to admit.
"Perhaps it would be better if Lan Wangji married someone else," he had overheard one of the elders say to another. "Someone who could give him an heir."
He had tried to shrug it off, to pretend that the words didn't hurt, but they did. He was young, yes, and still growing, but the insinuation that he wasn't good enough for Lan Wangji, that he was somehow defective, cut deep.
And so, the days passed in a haze of doubt and insecurity, the once easy companionship between him and Lan Wangji strained by the unspoken tension that lingered between them.
One evening, Wei Wuxian found himself alone in their quarters, staring blankly at the tea set Lan Wangji had so carefully arranged. The room felt cold, empty, despite the warmth of the lanterns that cast a soft glow over the furniture. He knew Lan Wangji would be back soon, but the thought didn't bring him the comfort it usually did.
He sighed, his fingers tracing the delicate patterns on the porcelain cup. Lan Wangji had always been so careful with him, so gentle, as if he were something fragile, something that could break if handled too roughly. But Wei Wuxian wasn't fragile. He was strong, capable, and yet, when it came to this...to the question of an heir...he felt helpless.
The door slid open quietly, and Lan Wangji stepped inside, his expression softening as his eyes found Wei Wuxian. "Wei Ying," he greeted, his voice as steady and calming as ever.
Wei Wuxian forced a smile, but it felt hollow even to him. "Lan Zhan," he replied, his tone light despite the turmoil churning inside him. "Did you finish your duties for the day?"
Lan Wangji nodded, moving to sit beside him, his presence a steady, reassuring force. But Wei Wuxian couldn't bring himself to meet his gaze, his thoughts still tangled with the doubts that had plagued him for weeks.
"Wei Ying," Lan Wangji said softly, reaching out to take Wei Wuxian's hand in his. "What is troubling you?"
Wei Wuxian hesitated, his fingers curling around Lan Wangji's instinctively. He wanted to tell him, to share the burden of his thoughts, but the fear of what Lan Wangji might say, of what he might think, held him back.
