The seasons had shifted once more, with another year passing in the tranquil, misty embrace of the Cloud Recesses. Wei Wuxian had turned eighteen, his body fully embracing the

transformation from boy to man. His face, once delicate and sharp with youth, had softened slightly, yet his features had grown more defined. He now carried himself with a confidence that hadn't been there before, though the lingering insecurities from the elders' constant murmuring about heirs still gnawed at him from time to time.

The distance between him and Lan Wangji had shifted in subtle ways. There were more moments of unspoken affection, more touches that lingered, eyes that met across rooms with an intensity that Wei Wuxian felt deep in his chest. But even with all this, there was still a palpable barrier between them, a wall that seemed to grow stronger the closer they got.

Wei Wuxian didn't understand it. Lan Wangji loved him, he knew that much. But there was something that kept his husband from fully embracing what was between them. Wei Wuxian had never been one to shy away from what he wanted, but when it came to Lan Wangji, it was as if every advance he made was met with a gentle, yet firm, resistance.

The Night of Restless Dreams

One night, after a particularly exhausting day spent dealing with clan duties, Wei Wuxian lay awake in bed, his mind turning over everything that had been left unsaid between them. The moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting soft, silvery shadows across the room.

Lan Wangji had already retired for the night, his breathing steady beside Wei Wuxian. But even in sleep, there was a tension to his posture that Wei Wuxian could feel in the space between them. He shifted closer, his bare arm brushing against Lan Wangji's as he turned to face him.

He couldn't help it. The frustration, the need, the longing that had been building inside him for months-it all came bubbling to the surface. He reached out, gently tracing the lines of Lan Wangji's face with his fingertips, his heart aching with the desire to be closer to him.

Lan Wangji stirred slightly at the touch, his breath hitching as Wei Wuxian's hand moved from his cheek to the edge of his jaw, the soft pad of his thumb brushing against Lan Wangji's lips.

Wei Wuxian froze, his heart pounding in his chest. He had been bold in many things throughout his life, but this this felt different. His body was hot, his mind spinning with thoughts he hadn't allowed himself to fully entertain before. His fingers trembled slightly as they trailed down to the collar of Lan Wangji's night robes, his breathing shallow as he leaned in closer, the warmth of Lan Wangji's body pulling him in.

But before Wei Wuxian could close the distance, Lan Wangji's eyes fluttered open, the golden hue of his gaze piercing through the darkness.

"Wei Ying..." Lan Wangji's voice was soft, but there was awarning beneath it, a tension that spoke volumes. His hand moved to gently grip Wei Wuxian's wrist, stopping him from going any further.

Wei Wuxian swallowed hard, his heart sinking at the resistance. "Lan Zhan... why?" he whispered, his voice barely audible. "Why won't you let me close? I'm not a child anymore."

Lan Wangji sat up slightly, his grip on Wei Wuxian's wrist loosening but not letting go entirely. His gaze softened, and he leaned forward to press a kiss to Wei Wuxian's forehead, the touch tender and filled with unspoken affection.

"You are still young, Wei Ying," Lan Wangji said, his voice filled with quiet restraint. "There is no need to rush."

"But I want to," Wei Wuxian admitted, his eyes wide and vulnerable. "I want to be with you, Lan Zhan... fully. Why are you holding back?"
