Strike.
I squeak throwing the covers over myself.
Normally, I wasn't scared of thunder. I actually found it soothing before I went to bed.
However, the lightning was loud and kept striking nearby. Which unfortunately was a fear of mine.
I closed my eyes trying to calm myself beneath the covers. As much as I wanted to stay under here it was just a matter of time till it got hot and I would need to leave this comfort zone.
Slowly, I began peeling back the covers. I held both sides of the covers with my hands holding it under my chin.
I looked over both shoulders feeling a bit scared. I then close my eyes trying to fall back asleep.
Strike.
Strike.
Strike.
I flinch snapping my head towards the window just to see it strike in the backyard.
I groan hitting the back of my head with the pillow. I blink open my eyes looking up at the ceiling.
I clutch onto Mom's hand squeezing my eyes tightly.
"Mommy, when will the clouds stop getting angry?"
She squeezed my hand in reassurance, "Soon honey, it will stop soon."
"But you said that already. I can't go to sleep." My voice trembles.
A hand carasses my cheek causing my eyes to blink open. I see Mom looking down at me with a gentle gaze.
"You know what how about I give you a little something to go to sleep, okay?"
I nod my head, "okay."
She leaves a small kiss on my head before getting up. I close my eyes and snuggle into the pillow.
After a few minutes, I hear footsteps coming towards the room.
I open my eyes to see Mom holding a small glass of milk. I sit up rubbing my eyes.
"Make sure to drink all of it and you'll be asleep in no time."
I nod my head, grabbing the cup with both hands.
I bring the cup to my lips gulping down the milk. Mom's hand brushes through my hair softly.
"Here Mommy," I hand her the empty cup.
I yawn softly stretching my lips. I smile as I feel myself growing sleepier.
Mom always knows what to do.
"Sleepy?" Mom asks as she puts the covers back on us.
I nod my head lying down on the cold pillow.
"Goodnight mommy, love you." I close my eyes.
"I love you more honey. To the moon and back."
I sigh ripping the covers off of me. I grab my glasses off the nightstand placing them on.
"Warm milk and sugar it is."
I look at the sweats that lay neatly on a chair. I had tried to put them on but they kept slipping off, no matter how hard I tried.
The briefs fitted me well enough so I just left it. The shirt reaches my knees anyway.
