Benj was practically bouncing with excitement as he got ready for high school, eager to finally make his move on Aurora. Standing in front of his mirror in nothing but his underwear, he practiced his confession.
"Listen, Aurora," he said to his reflection, "we've known each other forever, and now we're in high school. I need to tell you something. I've liked you for a long time. I don't know if you feel the same way, but I want to be honest with you."
He leaned in and kissed the mirror, pretending it was Aurora. "That was nice. You're good at this," he said with a grin, before mimicking Aurora's voice.
He kissed the mirror again but was abruptly interrupted when the door swung open, causing him to stumble backward.
"Ow! Don't you knock?" Benj shouted, quickly covering himself.
His sister, Alyssa, stood in the doorway with a smirk. "What the heck are you doing?"
"Nothing! Just popping a zit!" Benj said, trying to cover up.
"For a second there, I thought you were fucking your mirror or something. ," she said, leaving the room with an amused expression.
Benj hastily got dressed and went downstairs, where his mom was chatting with Alyssa about her recent nose job. Alyssa, always ready to tease, turned her attention to Benj.
"So, are you excited to see Aurora again?" Alyssa asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yeah, sure," Benj replied, trying to sound casual though he was practically bursting with anticipation.
His mom, ever the supportive one, joined in. "Benj, if you really like her, you should go for it. High school is a fresh start. Sometimes it takes a bit of courage to make things happen."
Benj smiled, appreciating his mom's encouragement. "Thanks, Mom."
Alyssa continued to tease. „still in love with the girl from kindergarten? Sounds like a fairy tale."
"Can you not?" Benj said, rolling his eyes. "I'm serious about this."
After hugging his mom goodbye and getting some last-minute advice about making friends and maintaining eye contact, Benj waited outside for his ride. When Rubens, his senior carpool driver, showed up, the ride was as awkward as he'd anticipated. Rubens erratic driving and odd behavior made the journey uncomfortable.
At school, Benj met up with Eddie and Connor, who had just gotten off the bus and narrowly avoided being hit by Rubens chaotic driving.
"So, you guys ready for the best year ever?" Benj asked, trying to stay positive.
Connor, ever the realist, replied, "You mean the last year of our lives."
Benj remained optimistic. "When that bell rings, we're starting fresh. Anything is possible."
Eddie was skeptical. "Like you and Aurora? Yeah, right."
Just then, Koosh drove up in his older brother's car. The guys watched as Koosh got out.
"Do we really have to hang out with him?" Eddie asked, glancing at Koosh.
"Come on, he's our friend," Benj said.
"Yeah, but he's a jerk," Connor added.
Koosh greeted them with his usual swagger. "Well, well. If it isn't the dick and his two little weird balls."
Koosh's older brother playfully him on the shoulder, and Koosh explained, "My brother says I haven't earned that name yet. He'll punch me every time he hears it."
"So, what should we call you?" Benj asked.
"by my real name" He says
„Dangah" eddie chimes in
"No dipshit it's Danah," Koosh said, rolling his eyes.
They all laughed, and Koosh continued, " sooo My parents are out of town this weekend, and I'm throwing a huge party. Five kegs, a sick DJ—it's going to be epic."
Benj raised an eyebrow. "How are you pulling that off? We're your only friends."
"My brother's helping," Koosh said.
Connor asked, "So, your brother's throwing the party?"
"No, we both are," Koosh insisted.
Eddie looked concerned. "Are freshmen even allowed?"
"Nope, but I'm VIP, and you guys are my three plus ones," Koosh said with a grin.
Connor corrected him, "That's plus three, you idiot"
Koosh laughed. "Two and a half, thanks to your shrimpy ass."
"If freshmen aren't allowed, Aurora won't be there," he said with a sigh. "There's no reason for me to go."
His friends groaned in unison.
"Man, what happened to starting fresh?" one of them asked.
"Yeah, Aurora's great, but she's in a different league," another added, gesturing to emphasize the point.
He continued, "Look, I get it. It's a long shot. But something happened this summer, and I really think I might have a chance."
As they bantered, Benj shared a story from the summer. "You guys won't believe this. I went to Aurora's house, and when she answered the door, she was wearing a tiny bikini. She'd just come from the pool, and she was cold, so you could see everything through the bikini top."
The guys were intrigued. Koosh grinned. "Damn, now we're getting somewhere."
Benj continued, "It looked amazing. I never thought I'd see her like that."
As he spoke, Aurora stepped out of Katrina's car. She looked stunning, and as she closed the car door, Benj couldn't help but notice her outfit, including the hint of a thong peeking out from her skirt.
"Holy shit, she's wearing a thong," Koosh said, his eyes widening.
Benj's heart raced as he made eye contact with Aurora. She noticed him and, to his surprise, smiled and waved.
"Holy shit, she waved at me," Benj said, his voice a mix of disbelief and excitement.
Eddie nudged him. "Wave back, idiot."
Benj awkwardly waved back, feeling a rush of nerves and exhilaration.
Koosh grinned. "Bet she'll be at my party. Her sister's queen bee, after all."
"Yeah, you're probably right," Benj agreed, his mind racing with the possibilities of the year ahead.
With that, they headed into school, Benj's anticipation for the new year reaching new heights.
