(Keefe's POV)

Those next few days were confusing, especially for me. Foster avoided me at all costs. She would completely ignore me in class, sit at a different table at lunch if I was sitting there, and whenever I walked past her she would narrow her eyes and then look away like I didn't exist.

Well, two can play that game.

I ignored her even more. Whenever she narrowed her eyes at me, I would look straight through her and wave to a friend standing behind her.

"She's still ignoring you?" My best friend and partner in crime, Dex, was a tech geek, which helped a lot with my pranks.

"Yeah." I tried to look excited about it, but it kinda made me sad. I kind of like it when she's got an attitude.

"Umm, I think that's about to change." Dex mumbled, pointing to something behind me.  Marella, Linh, Biana, and Maruca were all nudging Sophie forward forcibly, like they were trying to get her to come over.

"I'm not talking to that jerk!" Sophie protested as the girls kept dragging her forward, completely ignoring her. Linh looked a little bit sorry. "I will use my inflicting if I have to!"

"It's just one conversation, girl, chill." Biana ushered Sophie the rest of the way, until she was staring at her feet, standing right in front of me. "Go on, tell him."

"Ugh, fine." Sophie tugged on an eyelash before she mumbled, "While you were ditching class, the professor said that you and I are doing a project together. It's due in a couple of days, and he said we should..." She hesitated, glancing at her friends. "He said we should work together."

A smirk lit up my face just as the bell rang. I got up, threw my food scraps in the trash, and yelled, "It's a date, Foster!" Loud enough for everyone to hear. Then I walked out of the cafeteria before she could clobber me.

Sophie barged into my house right after school. "Hey, Sencen, you got any snacks?"

"Sure." I pulled out a tray of butterblasts and she snacked on them while she explained what the project was about.

"It's about elements, duh." Sophie replied. "The importance of them."

"Yeah, I know that, but how are we gonna do that? None of us can create elements." I mumbled. "Unless you're a hydrokinetic."

"No, but I know someone who is."

*****

"Can you help us do a project?" Sophie asked Linh.

"Of course! You need some water power?" She flicked her wrist, and instantly, a beautiful water bird flew around all three of us. "I'm happy to help."

"Thanks. Can you..." I tuned out all voices and stared at Sophie. The sun was just setting, and her beautiful golden brown eyes shimmered in the light. She tugged on an itchy eyelash, and I looked quickly away just when she was about to turn to me.

"What do you think?" Sophie asked.

"Elements are important because blah blah blah." I mumbled. "Anyway, I gotta get home." I quickly pulled out my home crystal and leaped away.

"That was weird." Sophie mumbled.

"I think that's just how boys are. Don't think about it too much." Linh replied.

"Yeah..." But Sophie couldn't help wondering... Just maybe... Was he nervous? And why?

Suddenly, Biana appeared next to them. "He totally likes you!"

Me and Linh both jumped.

"You guys are still scared of Vanishers?" Biana teased.

"Maybe." Linh and Sophie admitted.

"Also, I agree." Linh said. Sophie glared at both of them.

"He does NOT like me, for the last time!" Sophie complained.

Biana and Linh shared a look.

*I wanted to include Linh and Dex because they do NOT get enough page time. Anywaaay, thanks for the views! It was a LOT faster than my first book. Once you get started, I think it gets easier.
