(Elwin's POV)

Both of their bodies laid on the floor.

I froze.

This was the moment where everything mattered. If I didn't do this right, Sophie would die instead of being emotionless. I saw Sophie's hand resting in Keefe's.

To be honest, I was a Team Foster-Keefe shipper. But I brushed that thought away to focus on saving them.

I shuffled through the shelves. Sophie's skin color was slowly turning blue. I scrambled for the right exilir and dumped them into her mouth.

Then I turned to Keefe.

That's when I realized... His pulse was slowing down.

I grabbed all the heart exilirs I could find and helped him onto a cot while I fed him some more medicine. These two were really brushing death this time...

Keefe suddenly shot up.

"What happened?" He shouted. He froze when he saw Sophie.

"She's okay. But her cells are changing. It's something... Foreign." I explained. "I'm gonna try to restore her emotions, but there's a very small chance I can."

Keefe nodded grimly. "At least I have my Empathy back." His voice was gloomy and sad, like that didn't really matter anymore for him. He just wanted Sophie back. And I was going to try my hardest to make that happen. "It's weird, not feeling her emotions in the air."

"Yeah, well, let's hope I can fix that..." I mumbled as I told Keefe to pick up Sophie and put her on a cot.

He carried her, bridal style, to the cot, staring down at her hopefully, like he wished he could see her lively again.

I silently wished that too.

After hours of me feeding Sophie exilirs and Keefe anxiously watching her vitals, I realized I might have to get Physic (Livvy) in here so she could see if there was another way. Once she arrived, we started talking about possible solutions.

Sophie had been unconscious for 5 hours. Her pulse was holding steady, but her cells were transforming into something else.

"There might be one more solution." Livvy said quietly.

"What is it?" Keefe asked eagerly.

"We would extract the transforming cells to leave just the emotion cells to see if we can keep some emotions alive. She's already lost love, and joy... And peace... Maybe we can save some of the other emotions if we hurry." Livvy suggested.

So we got to work, trying to get the transforming cells out of her system. But... We couldn't figure out how to do that without removing her abilities, and a bunch of other vital features.

So now the one hope we had of restoring Sophie's emotions was gone.

(Keefe's POV)

I had my Empathy back.

But it wasn't worth it, because now Foster didn't have any emotions.

I felt myself slip deeper into the cracks of hopelessness as more bad news emerged.

There was no way to save Sophie's emotions. So when she woke up, she would be... Just a soul. Inside an emotionless body. And we still didn't know if that emotionlessness would be deadly, too.

I sat by Sophie's side.

"Foster, if you can hear me, please come back." I whispered, my voice cracking.

Elwin came into the room. "We were able to preserve some emotions."

"Really? That's amazing!" I exclaimed, hugging him tightly. "Which ones?"

"We won't be sure until she wakes up." Elwin mumbled. "But it's better than nothing. And it's the only way she'll survive this process."

My heart sank deeper. How could the love of my life slip away so quickly?

Elwin left the room, and I gently cradled Sophie's hand in mine.

I took a shaky breath, tears rolling down my cheeks as I whispered, "Once upon a time, there was a boy. He was... Raised by horrible parents, and he wasn't really loved by anybody, so he covered it up with a sense of humor. Nobody really noticed, because he acted like he was fine, but... He wasn't. One day, he met this... Amazing girl. She was... Beautiful, and smart, and kind, and she knew him very well. They had been through a lot together. She was the first person who ever made the boy feel loved and understood and cared for. But he was too afraid to admit his feelings. And then... It was already too late." I wiped my eyes. "The boy loved the girl very much. But now she would never feel his love again." I sighed. "Foster, even if you aren't able to feel love, I still love you more than you can imagine. Please don't leave me." I broke down into sobs as the vitals on the button of the chair beeped. I didn't notice it at first. The beeping quickened. A heartbeat. The real, living heartbeat of the girl I loved.

I clung to Sophie's hand, whispering, "Please. I need you." As her heartbeat increased steadily...

Until her eyes slowly fluttered open.

*evil cackling*

You knew it was gonna be another cliffhanger, didn't you?

Either way, I gotta go to church!

Bible verse for today: "For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is going to be revealed to us." Romans 8:18.

Have an amazing day!!
