(Keefe's POV)
I hadn't seen Sophie in four days.
She hadn't come to see me, either. So, I decided to finally march up to her house and apologize.
I knocked on the door.
A tired and worried looking Edaline opened it. "Um, hi, Mrs. Ruewen. Is Sophie here?"
Edaline's eyes flickered with sadness, tears already forming. "She's been missing for days. We've been searching everywhere. I'm sorry, Keefe."
Dread filled my gut. She had been missing for all these days and I didn't know?
Had she left because of me? Or, even worse, had something happened to her?
I should've gone after her.
"She didn't come back after the dance, did she?" I whispered, my voice trembling. Edaline shook her head, tears rolling down her cheeks.
"I can't go through this again." She whispered. "You have to find her. Please. I've tried everything. You're her only hope."
Before I could respond, I glanced up at the sky. A cloud had covered the sun. Usually, I wouldn't think that's too unusual, but almost immediately, even darker clouds surrounded the sky.
"What's going on?" Grady asked as he stepped out. My hair stood on end. I dived out of the way just as a lightning bolt struck where I had been standing.
"Keefe!" Edaline shouted. All noises were drowned out by the pumping of my heart. That was a red lightning bolt. Definitely not normal. I stared at my hands. They were charred and covered in dirt.
Edaline helped me stand up, and I stared at what came through the dark clouds. A familiar floating figure, his eyes glowing with fire. Fintan.
He smiled as he finally dropped to the floor. "That is just an ounce of her power."
"What are you talking about?" I asked, sliding a goblin throwing star out of my boot. "Tell me."
Fintan gave me an amused smile.
"Your little girlfriend has harnessed the full power of stellarlune. And you will be the first to witness it."
*****
(Sophie's POV)
I had joined the Neverseen for Keefe. Which is why I had agreed to accept the power of stellarlune. It was the only way to fix him, and although I could barely see it in his everyday actions, before he had met me, he had been forced to tell everyone if they were going to be Talentless or not. This was the only way to get rid of that. Then, when he was fixed, maybe he would come to his senses, and I could restart everything. No Council. No rebel groups. No war.
I was doing this for him. That's why the lightning bolt was red. My inflicting was my strongest ability, but I didn't know that attracting the full power of stellarlune would automatically attack someone who had been exposed to the element.
"Your little girlfriend has harnessed the full power of stellarlune. And you will be the first to witness it."
That was my cue.
I tried hiding behind my hair, but I just had to look. As I appeared in the clouds, I could see the tears on my parents faces, and the betrayal and heartbreak in Keefe's eyes. Now I understood how he felt.
"Foster...?" He whispered, tears blurring my vision. I tried not to look at him and swallowed the lump in my throat as I turned to Fintan.
"Phase One of the plan has been initiated." I whispered, ashamed. Fintan had told me to pretend like I was doing this for him. I wasn't, but if it kept Keefe safe, I was going to play it off completely.
