(Back to Leon)
The roaring fire blazed on each side of him, burning his skin. "Mom!" He cried. Suddenly, his mother was at him side, tugging at the sealed-shut window in his bedroom. "W-what's happening?" He asked, terrified. Turning to him, his mom said, "It's going to be alright, Leon." As she said that, a beam from the ceiling came crashing down in a fiery blaze, ripping at his mother's skin. He screamed through their heavy coughing.
With the last bit of her strength, she ran and kicked out hard to the window. Pieces of glass showered the lawn below. He felt her arms wrap around him, then she threw him out the window, where he landed awkwardly in the bushes. There were big blood patches on his shirt where she had touched him.
Leon looked up to the window as a loud crash echoed from the house, and the roof caved in. "Where is mom?!" Leon screamed. "Why is she not coming out?!"
That's when he realized he was alone.
Feeling beaten down and fuzzy, he crawled away to cover. He sensed someone approaching him. "Leon."
And standing over him with a cruel smile was none other than James and Jessie;
Laughing at him.
Leon shot up out of his bed, drenched in sweat.
When his mother died, he occasionally had bad nightmares, which got worse after his friends ditched him. Tonight, it was twisted with evil faces of Jessie and James. He looked around his dark room.
Breathing heavily, he picked up his phone and saw that it was five-o-clock. There was no way he would be able to fall back asleep.
Climbing out of bed, he pulled out a random book from his book-shelf. When he was eight to his mother's death, he was an avid book reader. At the age ten, his mom and him planned the best bookshelf they could think of, and decided they would have Bo make it for them.
It was funny, ever since Bo revealed to his mom and him that he had a way with wood, they constantly came up with projects for him to do.
He finally finished it about two years later, after Leon's mom died.
It was a lucky thing that he had stored it somewhere other than their old house, otherwise it would have gone up in flames the way everything else had that day.
However, after his mom died in that fire, everything that previously brought Leon joy or comfort, reminded him of all the time he and his mom did those things together.
Reading lost it's appeal,
sports lost it's appeal,
music,
sewing,
and everything else in between.
Sighing, he flipped the book to see its cover, Wings of Fire; The Dragonet Prophecy.
'Why not' he thought, flopping on his bed and turning on his lamp on his bedside table. A few hours went by. He was so invested in this fantasy book, he hardly noticed when the sun came up, flicking off the lamp without looking away from the pages.
And all of a sudden, he was at the last page.
Sliding out of bed to grab the next book in the series, his stomach rumbled. Nose buried in his book, he stumbled his way downstairs, trying not to trip on anything.
"What book are you on?" Bo's voice came.
"Second." Leon mumbled, diving into the breakfast Bo set out for him.
