"JJ," Pope said, getting JJ's attention as he heard sirens approaching them.
"Guys, that's the police." JJ sighed as they all looked over to the sheriff's boat.
"Oh, you gotta be kidding me." Pope sighed, getting up from his chair. Kie adjusted her top while she sat on the bow.
"Yep, that's the police," JJ mumbled, loud enough for the others to hear.
"Just act frickin' normal." Kie scoffed at them.
"Evening, officers." Pope said, sitting back down to "act normal" as Officer Shoupe moved his boat next to the HMS Pogue.
"Evening," Shoupe said as Officer Plumb moved to hand Pope the rope to tie the boats together so they would not drift apart.
"JJ, tie it off," Pope said, handing it to JJ.
"How you kids doing?" Shoupe asked, taking off his sunglasses. "You know the marsh is closed?" Shoupe continued to ask them.
"No," JJ answered quickly.
"No. Wow..." Pope started to lie, trying to keep his straight face.
"I didn't know that," JJ added, adjusting his baseball cap.
"Why-- why is it closed?" Pope asked when Shoupe looked over to Kie, who seemed the only one to dip in the water.
"Well, we're conducting a search out here. Boat went down." Shoupe said to the teens.
"Oh..." JJ said, glancing around like he had no idea.
"Seen anything?" Shoupe asked all of the teens.
"No," JJ answered quickly again.
"No boats. No." Pope lied again, shaking his head.
"Where's your friends you always hang with? He here?" Shoupe asked the Pogues.
"He's working," Kie answered when she noticed Pope getting nervous and JJ looking at the water.
"Hm..." Shoupe nodded while Plumb glanced at the kids. "Ah... Okay, well, I'm gonna check your little boat out," Shoupe said when he moved to get into the HMS Pogue.
"Yeah," JJ said as Pope got up from his seat.
"Yeah, hop aboard. You wanna check-- uh, check her out." Pope said as the boys moved closer to Kie, who sat on the bow.
"Thank you," Shoupe said, glancing around for beer or weed since the kids were acting weird. "Uh... you got another one of these?" Shoupe asked, holding up one of the life vests.
"Yeah." JJ nodded.
"Yeah, yeah." Pope nodded as well when Kie gave him a look. He was getting nervous, which would give them away.
"Of course. It's, uh... it's in the hold." JJ added, pointing to where the compartment was.
"Show him," Kie told the boys, standing up.
"Yeah, here we go," JJ said, getting the second life vest out.
Shoupe continued inspecting their boat before looking out into the water. He put on his sunglasses, looking around the front of the bow.
"Be careful," JJ said to him.
"Uh... Be careful. You don't wanna slip," Pope said while the four of them nervously watched Shoupe.
"All right," Shoupe said after staring at the water for a long time.
"All right..." Pope and JJ said nervously, hoping Shoupe would hurry since John B had to be out of air.
