“Apologies. We were informed to have you drive straight to the house. We don’t want to risk anyone getting mobbed.”
“We appreciate that and you remembering fae manners.” Our driver chuckles. The guy laughs.
“Yeah, I’m kinda a geek. We have game nights and do RPGs a lot. We were excited to find out it’s real and can’t wait to learn from real fae and stuff.”
“Here, take this. Website is on the back. Fill out the application, and we’ll see what happens. Hope to see you soon, kid.” I look out the window to see a very confused boy, almost an adult. I think. He looks at the card that our driver hands him and pulls out his phone. We’re almost out of sight when I see his face light up. He jumps and cheers. I wonder what that was?
“Our driver is one of the people who have transitioned. He can feel if people are good or not. He offers jobs to those he has a pull to and gives him a good feeling.” The General explains. “He would be in the office, but you can’t really get a feel for people through paper. He likes meeting them personally.”
“Oh.” I nod and continue looking outside. I watch colorful leaves fall from trees. Animals wander the yard happily. I see people with big, sleek dogs and weapons walking around. They must be the guards. Who would be ignorant enough to climb a 14-foot wall with a spiky black fence on top?
Still, I’m glad for the extra security.
The road to the mansion is long. The closer we get, the prettier and bigger it becomes. I hear the others exclaim and say it looks like an Irish castle. I need to find out more about moors, Ireland, and why they’re threatening to use a sheleighly or seeing who is walking around with one up their bums. Why would they do that?
“Alright kiddos, enough. No one is going to literally walk around with one up their rears. Stop confusing our friends and family.” I hear an accented voice and laughter coming through a phone. We are all connected to a ‘conference call’ in case of an emergency. It’s been… entertaining.
Our vehicles pull up to the front door. Guards are lined up on both sides of the path to the front door. Important-looking people are at the end. One is wearing a crown. Others are wearing funny looking shoulder things called epaulettes, sashes, medals, and more. I give Uncle Zane a questioning look.
“Officially, none of them are here. No social media is allowed to be posted for 72 hours. It’s for everyone’s safety. Heads of other countries, recognized and unrecognized, wanted to meet you. There are only a few here. None of them are war criminals or anything. The ones are, were not invited.”
“The Ash’A Jheili will set up protections while you are all greeting them.” Someone says. I guess a lot of them have come with and are constantly guarding us in the shadows. This voice is unfamiliar.
“I can help set another from the front door and tie it in with yours. If anyone tries a modern weapon, it’ll dissolve.” David sounds like he’s doing his evil grin. It’s creepy when he does it. When he’s teaching us and someone comes up with a new spell or way of using magic, he gets it. Clara was the one who gave him the idea for the barrier. She’s scary sometimes.
“Wait for us to give the signal, then you may leave the vehicles. Mágoi Miller, You may leave first. We begin in three minutes.”
“Understood. Excuse me.” I hear shuffling and him exiting the vehicle. I watch out the window as he saunters up the path towards the group. He bows before talking to them. He points to a spot in front of the large arched door. They step back on both sides and watch. He points his finger in the air, and a pretty blue light shoots up and bursts.
