After fleeing to the new world, which would eventually be America, they learned more of the supernatural world. They learned that nightwalkers and children of the moon were being hunted down to extinction by the Volturi. Why you may ask? Well, sometime in late B.C., a witch created a type of vampire that would be known as ‘nightwalkers’ because they would burn in the sunlight. They were unstoppable for a while until another witch decided to even out the playing field and created a nightwalker's greatest enemy, ‘children of the moon’, aka werewolves. These werewolves were slaves to the moon, forced to change against their will, however, in order to activate your werewolf side, you’d have to kill someone. The witch, not wanting werewolves running a muck all over town, laid the curse on 10  families who were deemed worthy, in every country, all over Europe. Of course, with men and women sleeping around, more and more illegitimate werewolves were created but only a few were activated. The werewolf gene would remain deep in one’s blood just sitting there, waiting to be activated. 

5 years later another witch with strong dark magic wanted to create another vampire, one who didn’t burn in the sunlight, one with greater power, one whose only diet was the blood of a human, nothing else…..The Cold Ones. Creating the oldest coven yet, the Volturi. After the cold one was created, nightwalkers and children of the moon clashed, and there were wars between the 3 supernatural powers. Only then, did the Volturi realize that their powers didn’t affect nightwalkers or werewolves, fearing they would lose power, they went on a killing spree, killing every active werewolf and nightwalker in sight. They even start hunting down witches to prevent them from creating nightwalkers and werewolves again. Werewolf were easy to kill as they often traveled alone, very few traveled in packs. Nightwalkers prove to be difficult but not impossible to kill. As they were lowering the population of witches, a witch named Helena warned them that they were unbalancing the supernatural world. She said that the supernatural must remain balanced at all times and that the Volturi killing nightwalkers, werewolves, and witches would cause the supernatural world to be exposed and crumble. Aro, thinking he outsmarted the old witch, said he only plans on lowering the population of witches but making sure night walkers and werewolves would be extinct. Helena said it doesn’t work that way, that if the last active werewolf was killed, then the spirits of the supernatural world would be forced to intervene and create balance back in the supernatural world by either getting rid of you, or creating an opponent, an enemy that would be evenly matched to you. Aro, not taking the warning seriously, killed the witch in a heartbeat. Aro should have listened, because after killing the last active werewolf, Native tribes were granted to gift/curse of shapeshifting in a wolf. This time to activate your wolf side, vampires either had to come on their land or be in near proximity. These wolves were unpredictable because once shifted, if they could get a handle on their emotions they would shift, these wolves however, were granted an imprint/soulmate to help them navigate and not lose focus of their duty of protecting its tribe and people. The Volturi were furious by this and tried again, to get rid of them, but that would prove difficult, So, they stayed in Europe, away from their new found enemy.

Over a hundred years later after the new world was discovered, that's were all, if not where most witches fled, to be as far away from the Volturi. To find sanctuary and a peaceful life, however, that peace would eventually come to end in 1692 where witch trials began. 1692–1693 was a witch's nightmare, those 2 years were hell, many were forced into hiding, others were on the run. Many of them fled into French territory and resettled in a small town which eventually became the city of New Orleans, Louisiana. That's where all of the remaining witches are in present time, using New Orleans' strong source of magic to stay safe. After 1693, witch trials began to die down and only a few happened from time to time. This is where Katrina and Nickolai pop up in history in the year 1730, the year of the last few witch trials.
