How It All Began

Nikolai and Katrina Devereaux were born in Bordeaux, France to Louis and Michelle Devereaux. They have 3 older brothers (who are 26, 25, and 22), 1 younger brother (who is 7) and 2 younger sisters (who are 6 and 4). Their father is a successful swordsman / businessman. He was known for making the most durable swords throughout Europe and that's how he made his fortune. They were the picture perfect family of their whole, on the outside they were perfect but behind closed doors it wasn’t.
Their father was abusive towards Katrina and only Katrina, none of the siblings knew why. They all tried to figure out why, especially Nikolai since he has a close bond with Katrina. She was a slave to her family, all of them treated her like nothing except for Nikolai. She was forced to clean, cook, do laundry, and yard work. Katrina was hardly fed, she rarely slept and if she failed a task or ‘did it wrong’, she was whipped and beaten by her father or brothers. 
She slept in the basement where that was deemed a safe place for herself. In that basement, she gets lost in her own mind, thinking about alternative endings about the books she learned to read. She loved the basement, it was where her brother would sneak in and teach her how to read, write, and learn different languages. Sometimes it was them against the world, not knowing that would be their fate.
One day, Nikolai began to wonder where his sister was with great concern after not seeing for 2 days, fearing his father had done something, little did he know, he was right.

“Père, où est Katrina?”he asked while entering his father’s office
(“Father, where is Katrina?”)

“Pourquoi? Qu'est-ce qu'elle est pour toi?” his father questioned for his chair
(“Why? What’s she to you?”)

“C’est ma soeur.” Nikolai responded truthfully 
(“She is my sister.”) 

“Faux. Elle n'est que ta demi-sœur, ta mère a eu une liaison. Michelle a essayé de faire passer le bébé pour le mien et cela est devenu un problème. Et que faisons-nous des problèmes, nous nous en débarrassons.”he said with a hint of anger.
(“Wrong. She is only your half sister, your mother had an affair. Michelle tried to pass the baby as mine and that became a problem. And what do we do with problems, we get rid of them.” )

“Père, où l'as-tu envoyée?”Nikolai said, demanding to know
(“Father, where did you send her?”)

“Pourquoi vous en souciez-vous ? Elle était un problème qui–” Louis tried to explain
(“Why do you care? She was a problem that–”)

“Je m'en fiche! C'est ma sœur, maintenant dis-moi où elle est?!” interrupting his father
(“I don’t care! She is my sister, now tell me where she is?”)

“Comment oses-tu élever la voix contre moi ? Je vais–” the father of 7 never got to finish his sentence.
(“How dare you raise your voice at me? I will–”)

“Quoi?! Tu vas me battre comme tu l'as fait.” Nikolai challenged
(“What?! You gonna beat me like you did her.”)
