Hiro appraised his appearance in his bathroom mirror as he tilted it this way and that, did his suit pants look too formal for a high school reunion, was his shirt too stuffy?
He wanted to come across as smart and successful but he also wanted to look casual and fun.
He hadn't been to a reunion since graduating from upper secondary because he didn't want to risk running into 'him' but his old school friend Kitt had assured him that the guy in question had moved back to the countryside so it was a billion to one chance that he would be there.
When asked how he knew, his friend had replied that he had overheard a couple talking about him and saying that his father had been in an accident so he had gone back home to take over the running of the family business and hadn't been able to continue on to college.
Ronni Witchattakam had kept to himself for the most part so no one really knew much about him other than he had enrolled in their school when he was 16 and had been a quiet student.
Hiro still couldn't believe what had happened on that last night before they had all gone their own separate ways and six years later he was still so ashamed of himself, how could he have been so irresponsible.
There had been a party at some random student's house and it felt like the whole damn school had been there. Everyone was in high spirits and Hiro had been no exception after consuming one too many beers and he was feeling no pain as he danced in the middle of the room.
It was while he was dancing that he had seen Ronni Witchattakam leaning against a door frame with his arms crossed as he watched everyone have fun and for a fraction of a second Hiro had thought that he was watching him but he told himself he was being fanciful.
He had decided to go over and chat for a while before wishing him good luck and he grabbed another two bottles of beer from the table as he passed it before heading across to the solitary figure.
"hey Ronni, I bought you a beer and I thought we could hang out for a few" Hiro said.
"sure, are you having fun? I saw you dancing a while back" Ronni had said.
"if you can call it that, I'm not the best at dancing" Hiro had laughed.
"you looked ok to me" Ronni had remarked.
"well, to us and to our futures" Hiro had said holding his bottle up to cheer with Ronni.
"to us and our future" Ronni had said and they had both stood for a while not really talking but watching everyone else make fools of themselves.
It was then that Hiro began to feel the effects of the alcohol and he had swayed and lost his balance falling into Ronni's arms.
"shiyaa, I'm so sorry man, I think I had a little too much to drink" Hiro had said.
"come on, let me take you home" Ronni had offered and Hiro hadn't had any reason to refuse.
It was during the ride back to his house that Hiro had asked Ronni not to take him home yet so Ronni had asked him where he wanted to go instead? Hiro had replied that he didn't care before falling asleep so he wasn't too surprised to discover upon waking that Ronni had brought them to the beach.
"hey, do you feel any better now?" Ronni had asked.
"yes, thank you, I'm sorry for ruining your evening" Hiro had said.
"it's fine, I'm glad I was there to help" Ronni had replied.
"you never say much do you" Hiro criticised him.
