*"Love is not about how many days, months, or years you’ve been together. Love is about how much you love each other every single day."* — Unknown

Priscilla sat in her elegantly decorated living room, letting the soft afternoon light stream through the large windows. Every inch of the house radiated comfort and sophistication—evidence of the love and care that had gone into making it a home. The pastel walls, the tasteful furniture, the art that adorned the walls—all of it reflected both her and John’s personalities. But beneath the calm exterior, Priscilla’s heart was racing. Today, John’s parents were coming to visit, and she had something important on her mind.
The doorbell rang, startling her out of her thoughts. She took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. But instead of John’s parents, she was greeted by the bright, eager faces of her best friends, Ada and Tayo.
"Mrs. Coker!" Ada exclaimed, practically bouncing with excitement. "We’re here for the honeymoon stories and the grand tour!"
Tayo pulled Priscilla into a warm hug. "You look absolutely radiant, Pris! Married life must be treating you well. Now, show us everything!"
Priscilla couldn’t help but laugh, her nervousness momentarily forgotten. "Come on in, you two. I’ve missed you so much."
As they stepped inside, Ada and Tayo immediately began admiring the house. Tayo’s eyes widened as she took in the living room’s spacious elegance. "Pris, this place is stunning. You’ve really outdone yourself."
Priscilla smiled, feeling a little self-conscious. "Thank you, but I can’t take all the credit. John’s parents helped with the interior design. They have such great taste."
Ada raised an eyebrow, clearly impressed. "Well, they did a fantastic job. This house is gorgeous. Now, sit down and tell us everything about the honeymoon!"
The three friends settled into the plush couches, and Priscilla began recounting her honeymoon in Santorini. "It was like a dream," she said, her eyes sparkling with the memories. "We stayed in this amazing villa overlooking the sea. Every morning, we woke up to the most breathtaking view."
Tayo sighed dreamily. "That sounds heavenly. You must have had the time of your life."
Priscilla nodded. "We really did. It was just the two of us, no distractions, just enjoying each other’s company. John was… incredible. He made every moment feel special."
Ada leaned in, a teasing grin on her face. "You’re making us all jealous, Pris! But seriously, John’s a catch. And now, this house? You’re living the dream."
Priscilla’s smile faltered slightly as she remembered the real reason for her nerves. She hadn’t told her friends yet that the house had been a wedding gift from John’s parents. While she was deeply grateful, the magnitude of the gift had been overwhelming. She wanted to express her gratitude properly when they arrived.
Tayo noticed her hesitation and touched her arm gently. "What’s wrong, Pris? You seemed worried for a moment."
Priscilla took a deep breath, deciding to confide in them. "The house… It was a gift from John’s parents. A wedding present. It’s incredibly generous, and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. I want to make sure I thank them properly when they arrive."
Ada and Tayo exchanged stunned glances before breaking into wide smiles. "Wow," Tayo breathed. "That’s… amazing. And I get why you’re nervous, but Priscilla, you don’t have to worry. Just be yourself and tell them how much it means to you. They’ll appreciate that more than anything."
Ada nodded in agreement. "Exactly. They wouldn’t have given it to you if they didn’t want to. Just let them know how grateful you are."
Priscilla felt a bit of the tension ease from her shoulders. "You’re right. I just want them to know how much we appreciate it."
After sharing more laughs and honeymoon stories, Ada and Tayo finally took their leave, with promises to catch up again soon. As Priscilla closed the door behind them, the reality of the upcoming visit from her in-laws settled back in. She spent the next hour making sure everything was perfect, though the house was already immaculate. She wanted everything to be just right when they arrived.
A short while later, the doorbell rang again, and Priscilla’s heart skipped a beat. She took a deep breath, putting on her warmest smile as she opened the door to greet John’s parents.
"Mama, Papa," she said affectionately, welcoming them inside. "Please, come in."
John’s parents smiled warmly as they stepped into the house. John’s mother, elegant and poised as always, placed a hand on Priscilla’s shoulder. "It’s good to see you, my dear. The house looks wonderful. You’ve done a lovely job."
"Thank you, Mama," Priscilla replied, leading them into the living room where refreshments were laid out. Despite her nerves, she tried to focus on making them feel at home. But she couldn’t shake the feeling that she needed to say something more.
Once they were seated and comfortably settled, Priscilla took a deep breath, gathering her courage. "Mama, Papa," she began, her voice a bit shaky, "I’ve been thinking a lot about how to say this… and I just want to thank you both, from the bottom of my heart, for this house. It’s more than I could have ever dreamed of, and John and I are so grateful for your incredible generosity."
John’s father, usually a man of few words, gave her a kind smile. "We’re glad you both like it, Priscilla. This house is just the beginning—a foundation for your life together. We wanted to give you something that would help you build that life."
John’s mother reached out and squeezed Priscilla’s hand. "We know John is very successful in his own right, but this gift is our way of supporting your new journey as a couple. It’s a symbol of something new and beautiful, just like your marriage."
Priscilla felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes—tears of relief, gratitude, and love. "Thank you, Mama, Papa. This house means everything to us, and we promise to fill it with love and happiness."
John’s mother smiled softly. "That’s all we could ever hope for."
The rest of the visit flowed with ease as they moved on to lighter topics, discussing family gatherings and future plans. The atmosphere was warm and comfortable, and Priscilla found herself relaxing more and more. By the time John returned home from work, the house was filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation.
John joined them in the living room, greeting his parents with hugs and a wide smile. "I see you’ve all started without me," he teased, dropping onto the couch next to Priscilla.
"We were just getting to the good part," his father joked, causing everyone to chuckle.
As the evening drew to a close, Priscilla realized that all her worries had been for nothing. John’s parents had welcomed her with open arms, and the house they had gifted them was just one of the many ways they had shown their love and support. More than just a building, it was a tangible reminder that she and John were surrounded by people who cared deeply for them and wanted to see them thrive.
After John’s parents left, Priscilla and John stood together in the now-quiet house, reflecting on the day.
"You were amazing," John said, wrapping his arms around her. "I know you were nervous, but you handled it perfectly."
Priscilla smiled, leaning into him. "I was nervous, but your parents are so kind. I’m just so thankful—for everything."
John kissed the top of her head, his voice tender. "We’re really blessed. This house, our life together—it’s all just the beginning."
As they stood there in the peaceful silence, Priscilla felt a deep sense of contentment. The house wasn’t just a gift; it was the start of their shared future, filled with promise and love. And with that, she knew they could face anything that life threw their way.
This house, given to them as a foundation, was more than just a place to live. It was a symbol of their love, the life they were building, and the family that supported them. With John by her side, Priscilla felt ready to make this house a true home, filled with laughter, warmth, and endless possibilities.
