JUNE 1, 2020 — KILLEAVY, IRELAND — RÉA
I wake to sunlight streaming through the windows. I open my eyes and see the golden rays falling over Bucky's sleeping form. As I watch, he stirs.
"Mornin'," he rasps, his voice hoarse and deep with sleep.
"Good morning." I stretch up and press my lips to his in a soft kiss, pulling back as my stomach growls.
"Hungry?" His phone alarm rings. "Perfect timing. C'mon, doll. Let's get you some breakfast."
We both slip out of bed, opting for loungewear instead of regular clothes. Bucky pulls on a pair of black, bamboo pyjama pants and a black t-shirt while I opt for a pair of underwear and a floor-length, dove grey bamboo robe.
"Y'know, I didn't see Celyse again yesterday," my husband remarks as we dress.
"She was there for a brief time. She left after the speeches," I reply. "She...well, she did what she was supposed to, according to the rules. She remained unseen."
"'Unseen'...do you mean invisible?"
"Yeah. I mean, I could see her, but that's because I'm, well, me."
He nods, then I watch as the realisation hits. "Wait...can you turn invisible?!"
I give him an 'are you seriously asking me that?' look, take a few steps away, and...then I'm gone.
"Réa?" he asks, eyes wide in surprise.
I clap my hands over my mouth to muffle my giggle.
"Okay. Well then. Remind me never to play hide-and-seek with our Little Wolf," Bucky quips.
I reappear, a grin on my face. "You'd be able to find them. Invisible doesn't mean silent...you have super soldier hearing. You could find them from their heartbeat."
He nods. "I...I think we should make a list. Before this little one arrives...of all of the things you can do, so that I have some idea of what she might be capable of. Because I don't need to be tucking her in and she sneezes and blinks us to Timbuktu, or be mid-diaper change and her wings go," he pantomimes wings unfurling and flapping.
"Still so sure this one," my smile widens as I rest my hand on my stomach, "is a girl."
"Yeah, I am. Because I know my girls. And right now, I know that they both want breakfast...peanut butter waffles with bananas, if I had to guess." His eyes sparkle with mirth. "Which is why I requested they be on the menu. So, let's get my girls fed."
He makes his way to the bedroom door, holding it open and gesturing for me to step into the corridor. He follows, taking my hand and leading me to the small parlour that's across from one of the other bedrooms. I see a room service cart holding three covered dishes, a carafe and a coffee mug, a teapot and teacup, two napkins, and two sets of silverware. Bucky gestures to one of the leather armchairs; I settle into it, and he wheels the cart over before taking his seat in the other armchair.
He uncovers the dishes, revealing two plates with scrambled eggs, bacon, sautéed mushrooms, tomatoes, and sausage...and one with peanut butter waffles topped with sliced bananas. My stomach growls again, and my mouth waters at the delicious aromas wafting from the plates.
"Go ahead, doll."
I immediately tuck in; if I wasn't so hungry, I'd probably be embarrassed by how quickly my breakfast disappears.
"Oh gosh, I'm stuffed," I sag against the cushion. "I probably shouldn't have eaten that last waffle, but it was so good."
I sit up, grabbing my teacup before adjusting in the chair, curling my legs beneath me.
