Chapter Nineteen

We drove to JJs cousins house who initially refused to help us after the stunt JJ pulled when John b was in prison.
"Ricky please! He's dying!" I butt in
"Izzy? What the hell happened to you?" He asks
"Help pope and then we can chit chat!" I yell
"No!" He says
"Ricky come on! I know your mad!" JJ says
"Yeah! Remember when you stole my ambulance!" He says
"Ricky someone is dying!" I say
"He's right here, please! He can't breathe!" Sarah yells from outside
"Who can't breathe?" He asks
"Pope!" I yell
"Look at him! Help my friend!" John b says
"All right, Jesus Christ." Ricky sighs opening the door for them
"Hey nice to meet you! Sorry!" Sarah says running in and clearing off a table
"You know I wouldn't come to you if it wasn't an emergency." JJ says
"Hang in there buddy." John b says
"What's wrong with him?" Ricky asks
"Wasps!" Kie says
"Is he allergic to wasps?" He asks
"Clearly!" I say sarcastic
"Raise his legs! Raise his legs!" JJ says
"What's his name?" Ricky asks
"Pope." Kie tells him
"Pope? Hey pope. Hang tight I gotta get my kit." Ricky says and leaving us
"Hang tight? Ricky!" JJ yells after him
"He's looking for a kit. Go help." I say
"Breathe a little okay?" Kie cries
"Come on pope! Your okay! Just breathe." I say stoking his cheek
"Just focus, focus on your breathing, okay?" Kie says
"What does it look like?!" I hear JJ yell
"It's like a duffel bag!" Ricky yells running past us
"Where's your kit?!" Kie yells
"Out in the garage maybe?" John b says
"Okay, okay! I got it!" Ricky tells us
"What do we do now!" JJ asks
"You don't do anything, because you are not a paramedic." Ricky says
"Hurry up." I say
"Okay. Hey pope. How you doing man? You look like shit. Here's the thing. This is a pediatric dose of epinephrine." Ricky says
"Is that enough?" Sarah asks
"He's not a kid!" John b says
"It is ten times a normal dose. So if... if it doesn't stop his heart it'll help him. But I have to give him the full amount or it won't work and I'm not going down if he dies."
"Okay! Fine! Do it!" JJ says
"Okay." Ricky agrees and injects the meds into popes arms. Pope lies on the table with no reaction and we all assume the worst.
"God I hate needles man." JJ says
"Uhm okay. That's it." He says taking the needles out
"Now what?" Sarah asks
"Ricky, what did you do?" I say after a few seconds
"You killed him." Kie says
"No."
"Yes you did!" Kie yells
"I didn't do shit." Ricky says
"What did you do?" She asks
"I did exactly what you asked me to do." Ricky snarls
"Please! Please! Pope, come on!" Kie cries
"Pope come on bro!" JJ says shaking him finally he gasps for air
"Hey! Wait! Wait! Wait!" Jj yells
"Pope, pope,pope?" I say and he coughs sitting up
"There he is! That's my boy right there!" JJ says
"It's hot! I'm real hot, guys." Pope says taking off his flannel
"It's okay, take it easy." John b tells him
"I gotta go outside." He says walking away
"I owe you." JJ tells Ricky following pope
"Take a sec!" Kie tells pope
"I need to get outside. It's hot! " He complains
"Hey! Your good!" John b says
"Thank you so much." Sarah says
"Are there any side affects we should be concerned about?" I ask
"He's gonna have a rocket up his ass for about an hour. Then he'll be fine." Ricky says shutting the door behind us
"Let's go get that cross!" Pope yells
"Whoa!" John b says
"Game six! I'm Michael Jordan!" Pope yells
"Yeah! Game six!" John b says awkwardly
"Okay pope how about we get in the van?" I say
"Let's get that cross!" He yells running to the drivers seat
"Uh nuh uh. Get in the back." I tell him blocking the door
"If you don't move I will rip all your ears off." He says
"Yeah okay." I say moving out of the way
"Bro." JJ says
"Pick your battles J." I say
About 20 minutes into popes driving time and he's already started driving like a pure maniac. Serving on the road, speeding. We're gonna be lucky if we make it to the church alive.
"Uh pope your driving pretty fast." Sarah says
"Wooo!" He ignores
"Pope, last to judge, but I think you should slow down a little." JJ tells him
"That would definitely delay our arrival to the cross. We gotta get there." Pope says
"Why did we let him drive again?" Sarah asks
"Because he said he would rip our ears off." I say
"I said I would rip your ears off." He says
"You did say that." Kie agreees
"I was joking about that by the way." Pope says
"That's a really funny joke." I say
"He, how ya feeling buddy?" John b asks
"Uh, fantastic. I don't know what JJs cousin gave me, but I am moving!" He says
"We couldn't tell." Kie says sarcastic
"Okay well um, your going really fast right now." John b says
"Yeah really fast!" I say and pope looks over to me and John b turning away from the road
"Pope! Road!" Kie yells
"Pope look at the damn road!" I yell
"I don't know if you noticed, but there's these giant oak trees all along the road. They're like six inches off the road." John b says and pope goes to pass a car but there a truck coming at us
"Okay you don't need to pass!" I say
"You don't need to pass! You don't need to pass!" Kie yells as he swerves around
"What an assole, right?" Pope asks
"He's going the speed limit!" Kie sighs
"We're not gonna get to the cross if we're dead pope!" John b says
"We're not gonna die. It's our divine right to get that cross." He says turning away again
"Pope! Look at the road!" John b yells
"Oh my god!" I yell as he swerves off hitting the trees along the road. The airbag comes out and hits me in the face knocking me out for a second, the windows all break in the back.
"Everyone good?" John b asks, I don't answer still trying to figure out what just happened
"Izzy you good?" JJ asks reaching over the seat to check on me
"Mhm, I'm fine." I groan trying to sit up but the seat belt is locked
"This is the last time you drive pope." JJ says opening the door to the truck and opening mine
"God my head hurts." I say getting out
"My dads truck! No!" Kie sighs looking at the damage
"Kie, one word. Totaled." JJ says shining my phone flash on it
"My parents are gonna kill me. For real this time." She says
"Yeah well, weren't they already gonna do that anyway?" JJ asks
"Helpful, thank you." Kie says
"we're gonna have to walk the rest of the way." Pope says
"Yeah no." I say sitting against the truck
"I'm going to get my cross." Pope says walking away
"Hey, just relax for a second." John b says stopping him
"Get off me."
"No, I'm trying to help. We just crashed the car!" John b yells
"I'm getting my cross." Pope says
"I'm trying to watch out for you!" John b says
"Pope! Pope!" Kie calls out for him
"Get off! Get off of me!" Pope yells
"There's a truck coming!"
"Oh god. I think I'm like mildly concussed." I say blocking the headlights as the truck drives by
"Wait wait I learned this on tv. Follow me finger." JJ says to me moving his finger around left right up and down, then leaning in to kiss me softly.
"Better?" He asks
"If I say no will you do it again?" I ask
"Mmm, sure." He says leaning in again
"What about now?"
"Mmm one more time." I say and he kisses me again
"There. Now get up, if your concussed your like not allowed to sleep or something." He says hold his hand out
"God." I roll my eyes taking his hand to help me up
"We gotta get back to the church!" Pope yells
"Pope?" JJ asks
"No! No! No!"sarah yells running after him
"Are we seriously gonna run the whole way?" I ask out of breath from the running
"We're almost there." JJ says holding my hand to help me keep up. We get to the church and pope unlocks the doors revealing that the cross was no longer there.
"It's gone." Kie says
"Damn it! I new I should've hidden it better.!" JJ yells kicking one of the cushions
"Okay what do we do? What do we do? What at do we do? Think, think, think, think." JJ says
"We need a plan." I sigh
"We need a plan. What the plan?"JJ asks
"Alright here's what we do. Well grab some kerosene tank from the chat then we... we go to my dads shop and grab some dynamite. And then we drive down to Charleston and tell this lady who she's messing with!" JJ yells
"Blowing up a ladies house is not going to make a difference." I say
"That's not gonna help." Sarah says
"Then what is Sarah?!" He yells
"I'm thinking, okay? We can't just go blow shit up jj." John b says
"Pope I'm sorry." JJ says
"Denmark would have stood right here... preaching to everyone he set free. A slave, the sole survivor of the Royal merchant, he got the gold, he got the cross, and he brought them both to shore and used it to free every person who walked through those doors. They made  church, a family, a congregation, a home. And the limbreys took everything from him. They sicced dogs on his wife and kids, and when he tried to get her remains they hung him. Well, I'm done. I'm tired of that shit. That is not how this is gonna end. We need a freaking win, guys. I'm going to get my families cross." He says walking out the church doors
"You guys coming?" He asks
"Well if you put it that way." John b says
"Well maybe we should think about it." JJ says
"Pros and cons?" John b asks
"Pros and cons list." He agrees
"Yea let's do a list."
"Hell yeah, we're coming pope!" JJ yells

"Oh shit! They found the truck!" I say
"Chill, chill, chill, chill." Pope tells me
"Of course. Izzy switch with me. Switch with me."" JJ says making me go up front and him in the back with Kie, Sarah and pope.
"All right, just relax. Just relax." John b says
"Well, looke here." Shoupe says walking over to us
"Good evening officer." John b says
"Sherrif." He corrects him
"Sherrif yeah, that's right." John b says
"Speed kills huh?" I joke
"I pulled the tags, and I know whose truck that is. Hey! Kie you drop your weed pen back there?" Shoupe asks shining the flash light in on her
"Found it." She says
"Sherrif I just want to say this is all my fault. She had nothing to do with this. I take 100% responsibility." Pope says
"Nothing to do with it? Huh? You wanna try that again? Your parents reported the truck missing four hours ago, and the keys were missing from the house. I'm taking you home. Or I can pull you all in for leaving the scene of an accident." Shoupe tells her
"Okay." Kie agrees
"Good. Plum." He says sending the officer to open Kies door
"I gotta deal. Hit me up later and make sure I'm still alive." Kie says
"What the actual fuck." I say once he walks away
"The cross is at tannyhill." Sarah says
"Sarah no." John b says
"It will be, Rafe has no where else to go. We can't help Kie now, we might as well do this ourselves." She says
"Oh my god twice in one day." I sigh leaning my head against the window
"Hey, no sleeping." John b and jj say
"What?" Pope asks
"She's 100% concussed from our little wreck." JJ says
"Ah. Oops." Pope says
"That's nice, thanks for your support." I say sarcastic
"Anytime." Pope says
