EMILY HAD RARELY ever seen her brother so worried through her whole life spent with him. For the rest of the day she had remained by his side at the hospital. Both Bob and Phoenix were fine but they were keeping them there for observation overnight and Logan decided to stay.
When Emily went back home that night she found Bradley sitting on the stairs of her porch with his head low. When she walked to him they didn't need to say anything as they hugged each other.
She invited him inside and he told her that he had talked with Maverick, well more like argued. But then he told her the bad news he had also just found out about. Iceman was dead. That was definitely what made Emily finally brake down and Bradley held her in his arms the whole night as she cried.
Iceman had almost been like a father to her. After her mother died and she started going to the Naval Academy, Iceman reached out to her. He had always been there since she was a kid since he was good friends with her father, but then when she argued with Maverick she hadn't seen him anymore.
So, after reaching out to her he always reminded close. He understood why her and her brother were mad at their father and he had often tried to bring them back together, even if he knew it would have been too hard. But he still stayed there for them. He taught them everything he knew and told them of his stories as a pilot and even the ones with their father. Losing him was like losing some sort of guardian angel. Because that's what he had always been to the twins.
The morning after Emily was dressed in her black uniform assisting to Iceman's funeral. He was a great man and many people loved him deeply. She stood in between Bradley and her brother. They watched as Maveirck stepped out to the coffin and planted his golden wings on it. A single tear slid down her cheek and Bradley looked down at her.
He moved his hand to hers and squeezed tightly. It was his way to say that he was there for her, he will always be there for her.
Later that day she had remained at the grave yard, standing in front of Iceman's grave. She had tears sliding down her cheeks, but she didn't care. Everyone else had left and despite her friends' protests, she had convinced them to just leave her alone for a while.
Suddenly she heard footsteps approaching and looked up to see her father walking to her. She simply looked back down waiting for him to reach her.
"He was a good man. He cared about you", he spoke up as he stood beside her.
"He's the closest thing I've ever had to a father", she told him harshly, keeping her eyes away from him. She was broken, hurt and mad. And right now she didn't know if she could handle talking to her father.
"Emily-", he began, but she cut him off.
"Why? Why did you do it, dad? Why did you tell us those things? Why did you tell me those things?", she asked him, hurt in her voice as she finally looked at him. And now the cat was out of the bag.
Years earlier after graduating from the Naval Academy, Iceman had convinced Emily to speak to her father. Logan hadn't agreed, so she had gone alone. She remembered that day vividly. It had been eight years since she had last seen him and he hadn't really changed much.
She hoped that he would see how much she had grown and that she had become a good pilot now. She wanted him to see that he could trust her now, that he could have faith in her. But instead he told her that he would have never trusted her and that he would have never approved that she flew for the Navy. And that was the day that she officially started hating her own father.
"I was trying to protect you", he told her with a sad tone as he looked in her tears filled eyes.
"Did you mean everything you said?", she slowly asked him. Maverick looked at her daughter with a sad expression. Truthfully? No, he never did. But he didn't want to lose her or her brother. He didn't want to lose them like how he had lost Goose. So, even this time he hesitated to answer and that was all she needed.
"You know, I really thought you were going to change, but you never will. Iceman will always be the only person I will ever see as a father. I don't need you to trust me or have faith in me, because till my last dying breath you can bet your ass that I'll always keep flying, Maverick", she told him, venom in her voice as she refused to call him dad.
Without saying anything else she left, bumping her shoulder harshly with his as she passed him. Maverick sighed and he could feel a small tear fall down his cheek as he watched his daughter walk away. Then he looked back at Iceman's grave and slowly spoke up.
"What have I done, Ice?"
