A SIGH ESCAPED the brunette woman's lips as she walked through the busy hallways of the Navy base where she had stayed for the past three years. It was a Naval base in Kitsap, Washington. It was the one where her mother had worked years earlier so she was already well known there and three years earlier she had been moved there.
Flying without her brother and Bradley had been hard at first. They gave her a new WSO and a new wingman, but most of the times she preferred flying alone. She still kept in contact with Logan who had remained in Florida with Natasha. He was most of the times a pilot now and barely ever worked as a WSO, but he still missed being his sister's WSO. She hadn't heard anything from Bradley, though, and maybe it was for the best.
She was thirty years old now, but she was still as good, reckless and skilled as she was ten years earlier, even more now. She had the 'talent' to make herself known wherever she went. She had been told many times that for this she was like her father. She risked a lot, but always got the job done perfectly.
She was one of the best pilots in the entire Navy and she was proud of that. But that also meant that they couldn't let her go, so she always took her chances to do whatever she wanted. That explains why she still did multiple high-speed passes over air-control towers.
She had gone on many missions throughout the years and she had shot four enemy planes. She shot down the first one a year after leaving Top Gun, while the other three were four years ago. She had managed to pass even her father who had shot down three enemy planes.
That morning she had been called to the Admiral Steve 'Ace' Johnson's office. Maybe for yet another scolding that like every time was going to end with Ace admitting that they couldn't let her go because she was too good. She had just got off her plane and had let her long brown hair down after having a tight bun the whole morning under the helmet.
Once she reached the office she knocked on the door until she heard Ace's deep voice reply with a 'Come in'. The thing about Ace was that despite often being frustrated with Emily's behaviour, he had to admit that she was one of the best pilots he had ever seen and he had basically taken her under his wing ever since she had gotten there.
Emily walked inside the office and closed the door behind her before walking in front of the Admiral's desk. Ace was standing up, giving her his back as he looked out of the window of his office.
"Emily 'Star' Mitchell. Eight years of service, three of which you have spent here. You've got combat medals, four confirmed air-to-air enemy kills. One of the only ones to achieve something like that, if not the only one. You're the best we have here and one of the best in the entire Navy. But you have your flaws, too", the tall dirty blonde man began as he turned around to look at her.
"You're reckless, you risk your life too much, you're dangerous", he said his tone getting harsher as he came face to face with her.
"And yet, those flaws make you the great pilot you are now. You know, I've tried to find an excuse to actually be mad at you, but every time you prove me wrong. Because the truth is, you are the best pilot I've probably ever seen. Even better than your own father", Ace told her and Emily frowned at the honesty in his voice. She definitely didn't expect that.
"Why did you call me here, sir?", she asked after a while with a confused frown.
"Star, go pack. You're going to North Island", he told her, the hint of a smirk on his face.
"North Island, sir?", Emily asked with a frown. It couldn't be.
"You've been called back to Top Gun", he told her, this time the smirk quite evident on his face. No fucking way. "You're leaving in an hour, so go get ready. Dismissed."
"Thank you, sir", Emily said trying to hide her excitement as she moved to the door. Before she could leave, though, Ace called her.
"Star?", he called her and she turned back around.
"Behave", he told her, but a knowing smile was present on his face.
"Yes, sir."
