My heart skipped a beat and the corners of my mouth spread into a wide grin as I watched the small children sitting in front of me, their eyes warming up with excitement as I continue to read to them one of my favorite stories as a child, Curious George.

I was volunteering at the Alphacrest Children's Cancer Center, a pastime I participated in throughout the week because I wanted to give back to my community and, more importantly, be a positive reinforcement within the medical field regarding children.

Although many of my classmates at my university opted to do internships at Fortune 500 companies at state-of-the-art facilities that showcase the billions of dollars these companies possessed, I decided to do something most college students would overlook or wouldn't even think twice about doing, spending their afternoons around terminally ill children, reading them books, sitting bedside with them putting smiles on their faces, to brighten up their days after feeling fatigue and sad after having chemotherapy treatments that drained them completely of their energy.

I had been spending almost four years of my time here while in college volunteering part-time at the Alphacrest Children's Cancer Center. I had been offered on several different occasions a job to work full-time at the center, but it was not about the money, I truly had a love of children.

"Ms. Verena could you go back to the part where George flies a kite", I smile in the direction of a little girl, Emilia, who recently was diagnosed with Stage 4 leukemia. Emilia was a fighter at just seven years old, and although she has undergone many rounds of chemo treatments that resulted in her losing her hair or not being able to play her favorite sport, which is soccer.

She always manages to have a heavy load of energy. She would run up to me smiling from ear to ear each time I would come to visit her in her room or she got the opportunity to spend time with me, while relieved her parents, urging them to have some much needed to time recuperate themselves before coming back to see their daughter.

Emilia was one of the reasons why I truly enjoyed volunteering here at the center. I am reading to a group of 10 children ranging from 5-7 years of age, all of them suffering from various types of terminal cancer. I knew each of their names by heart and would spend time with each of them.

Just as I continue to read, Emilia gets up from her seat in the middle of the circle, as my eyes make contact with Eryx, who I did not realize was in the room, until Emilia walks up and stands in front of him and begins talking with him. I watch the exchange as I continue reading, her little small body comes barely to Eryx's knees as he looks down at her and smiles.

He kneels and Emilia whispers something to him that causes him to grin. Butterflies form in the pit of my stomach as I watch Eryx. I did not realize how much I enjoyed seeing him smile until this very moment. He was so damn sexy to me. I realized at that moment I was attracted to Eryx. I'm not sure when it started, but the more time I spent around him, I took notice of the small things.

For the way he frowned instantly if he did not like something, he would crack his hands, if he was frustrated, or he always remember everything I told him, even if it was a topic he probably wasn't interested in. Emilia then takes hold of Eryx's hand as they walk over to the group. Emilia is an extrovert and has no problem talking to anyone.

So it does not surprise me when she interrupts me while I am reading, "Ms. Verena, Is it okay if Mr. Eryx comes sit with us during storytime", she asks me as she pouts her lips up, pleading for me to say yes. I look up at Eryx and he grins at me. "You heard the little princess, let me join the party", Eryx smirks as he continues to hold Emilia's hand. I sigh, "Alright". Emilia pats her hand on the floor, "Sit next to me", Eryx greets the other children, giving them hi-fives or small waves to those who are shy.

All of the children welcome him with open arms as I continue to read. I animate my voice at times, which causes the kids to laugh while Eryx watches with amusement in his eyes. One of the nurses comes over and announces to the children it is time for them to leave for the day. Many of them are not ready to go and beginning pouting and whining. "It's okay kids, We can do this again tomorrow".

Their screams of joy touch my heart as many of them begin to leave for the day. Just as the last child leaves the activity room, I sigh in relief as I settle on the floor, getting toys off the ground and placing them back in the toy bin against the wall.

"Those kids wear me out, but I truly love every one of them like they were my child". Eryx nods and begins helping tidy up the room, "When you told me you volunteer here, I wanted to see for myself if you are good with children and you definitely are. I see why now you were able to handle Zyran and Kaemon so well. You truly have a gift". I blush at Eryx's compliment.

"Thanks, Eryx that means a lot to me". I then point down to the books I have in my hand, "I'm just going to put these back in the storage room right quick, give me a moment".

I walk down the hallway, many of the staff have left for the day so I walk past the now vacant receptionist's desk as I make my way to one of the storage room, we keep an extra set of books and toys that have no room to fit in the activity room.

I pry open the door with my free hand as I manage to pull the light switch as begin to place the books in the storage case. Just as I place the last book on the case, I hear footsteps and turn my head around to see that Eryx has shut the door, locking it in place.

I am curious to know why Eryx has locked the door. "What are you doing", I ask as turn my entire body around, as Eryx strides over to me, before he presses his body against mine, before he wraps his hands around my waist, before his lips capture mine. I gasp in excitement and tug his head forehead as tongue slides into my mouth, his cinnamon breath mingles with my peppermint tongue. Our lips move in sync against each other as his hand holds my body in place as the heat ignites inside of my body, warming my blood and goosebumps form of my skin.

I have never been kissed before with so much intensity and passion. Eryx suddenly breaks the kiss as our chests are pressed against each other, are breaths labored. "I think it is about time we have re-do for our first date don't you agree Cherie", Eryx reveals. I grin and nod my head in agreement.

"I believe so Mr. Vallea". I then pull his shirt collar, before his lips capture mine once again.

I hoped this flashback chapter. I truly love writing flashbacks scenes of Verena and Eryx. Although their relationship is now tumultuous  I want you as the reader to see how in love they were at the beginning of their relationship.
