013: FAMILIAR PATTERNS
༊*·
When Klaus and Harper had gotten back to the house, the Nanny hadn't brought Aimee home, yet. Klaus ended up not helping with bags, and instead wandered the small house, looking at photos and such. Most of the photos were of Aimee, since Harper was always behind the camera, except for the Christmas photos from 1962, when Aimee wanted to learn how to use the camera. They were messy selfies.
The house was small, but cute. It was very Harper. There were photos, and the light switches had little notes beside them, that said 'if ma doesn't hear you when you call her, flick the lights on and off'. There was a notepad on the kitchen bench, too, that he flicked through that had notes on it from Aimee. According to Harper, sometimes her hearing was worse, sometimes it was better, so they had little things they did to help with it.
The record collection in the living room was honestly borderline hoarding, but without Spotify Harper said she needed it. She had Elvis Presley, the Ink Spots, Skeeter Davis, Edith Paif, though she said that the past four years had been horrid without any Queen, and that she wanted to decade to come and go so that she could hear them again. However, she did play some of their music on guitar for Aimee, that she remembered.
But after unpacking the food, and explaining some of the things around the house to Klaus and Ben with the radio playing in the back, they heard a news report about Allison's protest becoming violent, and Klaus said he'd check on her himself, but Harper called Aimee's nanny, who said she was completely fine with keeping Aimee for however long she needed, since she had nothing planned and could just look after her in the house, so the pair left to help.
Hence, why Allison was up at 7 in the morning, ringing any hospital she could think of in the city, trying to work out where Ray was, as he'd vanished the night before, while Harper was asleep on the couch, Klaus snoring on the ground beside her.
Allison had filled them in the night before, after they found her and brought her back to her house. Things had gotten violent, and to save Ray's life, she had to use her powers, Ray seeing. Harper didn't mention that Klaus told him they were brother's in law. But she also didn't see how that would change anything.
The phone being slammed down is what woke Harper.
"Allison?" She leaned up, suddenly, on her arms, as she'd been asleep on her stomach. "Al, everything okay?"
"No, I'm not." She paced in her dressing gown, as Harper fell off the couch and onto Klaus, waking him and making him yell as she kneed him in the stomach. "Ray didn't come home last night."
"Okay, okay." She got to her feet, shakily, since she was just asleep, standing on either side of Klaus' leg as he tried to kick her ankle. "That's okay, we'll track him down. We got all we need right here."
"You know what I need?" Klaus sat up, hair a mess, which Harper crouched down and tried to flatten as he rubbed his eyes. "A cup of coffee, vitamin B12, and, oh, a piping hot bowl of menudo, and then we're going to sort all of this stuff out."
"He saw me rumour a cop." Allison turned to them, voice frantic.
"I know. But you - you were saving his life. I mean, that asshole was gonna kill him."
"God, I'm such an idiot." She sunk into a chair at her dining table.
Harper stood, walking over to her. "No, you're not."
"I swore to myself I would never do this again. Nothing good ever comes of it."
"Look, Allison, your powers are a part of you like your . . toe." Harper sunk into the chair beside her, hand on her shoulder. "You can walk without it, yeah, but life is a whole lot easier if you've got it. Any you know who loves your toes? Your husband."
