JESH

"Alright. We still have 7 minutes left but class dismissed," the professor said.

I hurriedly put away my things and placed them in my bag. My classmates were racing to get out the door, so I purposely stayed behind.

It’s not like the cafeteria is going to disappear, right? Bakit talaga makipagsiksikan at makipag-unahan?

"Hi, Jesh."

Napalingon ako sa nagsalita. Classmate ko iyon but I forgot his name.

Ngumiti lang ako as a form of response.

"I was wondering if you're interested in running for the position of Auditor under our political party for the upcoming election. President namin si Kharl, and I am the Treasurer."

Why are they recruiting me suddenly for a position I don't even want to run for? First, si Kharl last Saturday although napilitan lang naman iyon. Second was Anne who reached out to me earlier and introduced herself and now this person right here.

Who is he again? Fenrir ba pangalan nito? Frederin? I forgot.

"I-I'm not interested in running."

"Bakit naman?"

"I just don't l-like the idea of engaging myself in politics," I said as I took my bag with me and headed towards the door.

Politics, whether it's within the school or the country in general, irks me. I've seen enough. It's more of a popularity contest. Talo 'yang credentials mo kung kalaban mo ay sikat. People will always settle for incompetent candidates rather than choosing the candidate who can bring betterment to their lives.

Not all though, but most of the time. And that's a very sad reality.

I walk through the hallway with my gaze once again fixed on the floor. I avoid making eye contact with strangers as it always makes me feel awkward.

"Jesh!"

Who's that?

I stopped walking and I look around.

Sino 'yung tumatawag sa'kin?

"Hey."

Napalingon ako sa likod ko and I saw this student, a bit taller than me, while holding a paper bag.

Based sa suot niyang lanyard ng ID, he's from the education department. Sino na naman 'to? Is he going to recruit me for a position as well?

"Pinapabigay nga pala para sayo," he said as he handed me the paper bag.

Automatic na kumunot ang noo ko. Tiningnan ko ang laman 'nun. Pagkain.

"K-kanino 'to---"

Luh? Biglang nawala.

Why would someone handed me a lunch?

'Di rin naman ako nag-order through online. Kanino 'to galing?

I just brought it with me and went to my usual spot, the small playground. No one’s ever here, and it’s peaceful, so this is where I always eat.

I took out the styrofoam containers from the paper bag. There were three—one with rice, and the other two with food. Lumpia and pancit.

There’s even juice.

Who could this be from?

Don’t tell me this is from Kharl? I’m not trying to be delusional, but what if it really is from him? Given the fact that he knows what happened to me yesterday, it’s not impossible that he bought me food just to make sure I’m not skipping meals anymore.
