Your birthday party was in full swing, the chatter and laughter of your friends filling the air. You stood by the snack table, talking to a guy you met through a mutual friend, someone whose name you barely remembered but who seemed interested in keeping the conversation going. His jokes were light, and you laughed politely, though your mind was elsewhere. Or rather, it was on someone else.

Sae Itoshi.

He stood across the room, leaning against the wall with that usual detached look on his face, eyes scanning the crowd like he was bored out of his mind. That was Sae, after all-always calm, always composed, and always a little too aloof. You'd been friends for years, if you could even call it that. Sae didn't do friendships, not really. He was more of a constant, a figure who appeared when he wanted to, said little, and left without warning. But he was here now, at your birthday party, and that in itself was surprising.

You felt his eyes on you. There was something different in the way he looked at you tonight, but you couldn't quite place it. Not that you had time to dwell on it because the guy next to you cracked another joke, and you found yourself laughing again, albeit half-heartedly.

That's when it happened. You barely noticed Sae walking toward you until he was right there, standing in front of you, his gaze cold and piercing. The guy you were talking to faltered, his smile fading as Sae's presence seemed to overshadow everything.

"Sae, hey-" you started, unsure of why he looked so intense.

"We need to talk," he interrupted, his voice sharp and commanding, the kind of tone that made people listen whether they wanted to or not. Without waiting for a response, he grabbed your wrist and pulled you away from the crowd, leaving the other guy standing there awkwardly.

"Sae! What are you doing?" you protested, but you didn't pull away. You couldn't. Sae's grip wasn't painful, but it was firm, as if he wasn't giving you a choice in the matter.

He didn't speak until you were both outside, the cool night air hitting your skin. He finally let go of your wrist, turning to face you, his expression unreadable, but there was something simmering beneath that usual icy exterior.

"Sae, what's going on? This better be real important," you said, crossing your arms.

For a moment, he didn't answer, just stared at you like he was trying to figure something out. Then, in that blunt way of his, he spoke. "Who was that guy?"

You blinked, taken aback. "What? You mean the guy I was talking to? I don't know, some friend of a friend. Why does it matter? You know him or something?"

"It matters," he said, his voice a little too sharp, "He pisses me off. I fucking hate seeing you with him."

You frowned. "Why do you sound like my friend's jealous boyfriend--" a gasp of realization left your mouth. "Wait..are you jealous?"

He scoffed, but it lacked his usual arrogance. "Jealous? You think I get jealous? Me?"

"Well, you're acting like it," you shot back, the irritation clear in your voice. "What's your problem? He was just being nice, and it's my birthday, Sae. Why are you making this a thing?"
