You and Rin had been inseparable for what seemed like forever. The two of you made an odd pair; he, the cold and distant guy who always kept his emotions hidden behind his indifferent gaze, and you, the cheerful, clumsy girl who constantly found herself tripping over her own feet. Yet, despite the obvious contrast, you both had a bond that no one could quite understand.
It was no surprise that the rumors swirled around you both. Whenever you two were seen walking together or talking, people would whisper and nudge each other, always jumping to conclusions. "Are they dating?" "They look like a couple." Yet every time, both of you would laugh off the accusations with a lighthearted denial. After all, you weren’t dating; at least, not technically. But deep down, a part of you didn’t mind when people thought that way.
Today, though, something felt off. As you sat at your desk, your gaze kept drifting to the empty seat next to you. Rin wasn’t in class today, and you couldn’t help but feel a small pang of unease. Rin wasn’t the type to skip school unless something was wrong. You pulled out your phone, unlocking it with a swipe of your finger, and went straight to your chat with Rin.
“You dead?” you typed quickly, your fingers tapping nervously on the screen.
No reply.
A frown tugged at your lips. You knew Rin wasn’t the fastest to respond, but this was strange. He always at least acknowledged your messages, even if it was just a one-word reply. But now, your message had been left on “seen.”
Worry crept in as the school day dragged on. You couldn’t concentrate on your classes, your mind constantly going back to Rin. What if something had happened to him? He wasn’t one to openly express his emotions, but you could tell when something was off. Your thoughts ran wild, and by the time the last bell rang, you’d made up your mind.

You arrived at Rin’s house just as the evening sky began to turn orange, the cool breeze brushing past you. Rin’s house was relatively quiet. You stood at his doorstep, raising your hand to knock, but before you could, the door creaked open on its own.
“Rin?” you called, pushing the door open more, stepping inside, before closing it. The house was eerily silent. As you made your way down the hallway, you could hear the faint sound of shuffling from his bedroom. You knocked on his door.
“Rin?” your voice laced with concern. When there was no response, you opened the door. What you saw took you by surprise.
Rin was lying on his bed, his features flushed with fever. His usually perfect dark hair was messy, falling across his forehead in disarray. A blanket was thrown over him haphazardly, and he seemed to be staring at the ceiling, lost in thought, or maybe just too tired to focus.
“Oh, God. Rin..”
He turned his head toward you, blinking as if he couldn’t fully process what was in front of him. “You... came?” His voice was hoarse, as though even speaking required more effort than he could muster.
