Backstory Katherine Elizabeth Bates was born on September 29, 1967, to parents Malcolm and Caroline in Scarborough. She became a big sister when her parents welcomed Rhiannon in 1971.
Kathy lived happily in Scarborough until the financial crash of 1987 forced the Bates family to relocate to Carlisle. Seeking to broaden her horizons, Kathy pursued a university course in Manchester, staying in nearby Altrincham. This decision would prove fateful.
During her studies, Kathy's caring nature drew her to Justin Rutherford, a charming but manipulative young man. As the 1990s began, the Bates family, with help from friends, reclaimed their Scarborough home and offered Kathy a room. She declined, unaware of her father Malcolm's growing suspicion of Justin.
