Island- Ayanokoji POV
Horikita looked at me in confusion.
"I asked you. What do you mean by that?"
"You've subconsciously tied the thought of people being academically inferior to you with the thought of people ostracizing you for your intellect. That however is incorrect."
"What are you..."
"Have you ever stripped down your mindset purely to a logical standpoint? If you had you would have seen the error in it."
Horikita seemed to think for a second before showing a face of understanding.
"Horikita. Did you even try to reconcile with them or did you only accept their words and disregard them without a second thought?"
"I... I..."
"While it is human nature to change that change cannot be forced under normal circumstances. Changing a person is very difficult but changing yourself is much easier. If you had reflected on your actions and realised your fault and apologised the isolation you suffered would never have come to be. You watched as your connections were severed and didn't even attempt to reach out to save them. "
"Ayanokoji..."
"Do you understand why your brother doesn't want you here? Because you're weaker than you were in your first year of Middle School."
"I'm weaker than... back then?"
"I just can't do it. I can't think of them as friends."
"Then don't."
She looked at me with shock.
"Then what am I supposed to do?"
"I already know you're incapable of thinking of them as friends. In that case, you should instead think of them as chess pieces on a board you're using to reach Class A and eventually you'll form connections from spending time with them. In the end, those bonds you form will make you able to see them as friends."
"I've been such a fool this entire time."
She laughed a little.
"Ayanokoji. Thank you. You really are incredible."
"Why are you praising me all of a sudden Horikita? It's kind of creepy."
"Then how about I stab you with my compass when we get back on the ship instead?"
"That's my seatmate."
She laughed as she looked sad.
"Still we've lost this exam. I'm frustrated."
"Don't be so sure."
She looked at me confused.
"What are you talking about?"
"I'll win this exam for us under a few conditions. You're not going to like them."
"What is it?"
"The first is that you will take credit for our victory."
"You can't be serious. I'm not taking credit."
"Or we can lose."
She struggled with her thoughts for a second.
