After dropping her younger brother off, Maeve drove John B's van and parked it in front of the beach. When she got out, she could already see her friends carrying their things down to the sand.
John B and JJ were holding the keg while Pope, Kie and Maeve were all holding certain things like a large amount of cups and some snacks. They place the kegger and arrange things in the center of the sand, John B fills a few cups for each of the five and hands them out.
Beach parties were about the only time the Kooks and Pogues communicated without ripping each other's heads off, well, sometimes. Basically everyone was invited, even tourists and It didn't take long for more people to arrive at the beach.
–Eve, wanna see who drinks faster? –JJ called out, raising a cup with a playful grin
–Don't you ever get tired of losing? –Maeve replied with a smirk, grabbing the cup from his hand
Drinking competitions were a staple at their parties, and JJ and Maeve were always the main contenders. Though JJ often let Maeve win, it was all part of their fun.
–Ready? –Maeve asked, filling her cup to the brim
–Born ready –JJ winked, a confident smirk playing on his lips
–One, two, three, go! –They both shouted in unison, starting their competition
JJ noticed that his drink was nearing the end, while Maeve still had a few sips left. Deciding to play it cool, he slowed his pace, savoring his drink as Maeve chugged down hers. She finished first, slamming her empty cup onto the keg with a triumphant cheer. The crowd around them erupted in cheers.
–I won again! –Maeve exclaimed, reaching out for a high five
–Next time, I'll win –JJ said, gripping her hand tightly and flashing a playful grin
–Mmm, sure you will –Maeve teased, still basking in her victory
Just then, Cole approached from behind and wrapped his arms around Maeve's waist
–Hey –Cole greeted, giving her a warm hug
–Cole, hi! So glad you made it –Maeve hugged him back and gave him a quick kiss
–What's up, JJ –Cole said, lifting his hand in a casual greeting
–Cole –JJ replied curtly, ignoring the offered handshake and turning his attention elsewhere
JJ and Cole had a long-standing friction between them. Even before Cole moved to the north side, there had been tension. JJ had never been a fan of Maeve's boyfriend, and their strained relationship was an open secret among their friends.
JJ has always been protective of his friends, and particularly of Maeve. When Cole entered the picture as Maeve's new boyfriend, their relationship became a point of contention. JJ felt that Cole was not good enough for Maeve or simply did not like her presence, which fueled feelings of antagonism.
