It was Wednesday, and Maeve had just wrapped up her shift at the bar club. She and her co-worker, Peeler, were closing the lockers where they kept their things.

–It was crazy! –Peeler reminisced about last night –John B calling Topper to a fight, so brave of him

–Yeah, tell that to his black eye –Maeve replied, swinging her bag over her shoulder

–It's a shame, I was really rooting for him to break Topper's ugly face –Peeler laughed

Maeve chuckled –I'd literally pay to see that

–Good thing JJ stopped them –Peeler added with a sigh –By the way, why the hell did he have a gun?

Maeve's heart skipped. She was about to conjure up some excuse when a voice interrupted them.

–Eve?

Maeve looked up to see her boyfriend, Cole, approaching in gym clothes, a water bottle in hand, probably on his way to work out at the club. The awkwardness settled instantly between them.

–Hi –She responded, glancing sideways at Peeler

–I'm gonna head home –Peeler said, sensing the tension and lightly touching Maeve's arm –See you tomorrow, Mae

Maeve took a deep breath. She knew this conversation was inevitable –Okay –She replied, watching her friend walk off

Cole looked nervous, scratching the back of his head –So... wha... what are you doing here?

–I work here –She answered, her voice flat

–Sure, uh... I like the shirt. Is it new? –Cole shifted on his feet, his eyes on the oversized shirt Maeve wore over her black bikini

–No, It's Pope's –She said, her tone curt

–Babe, come on –Cole tried to close the space between them –Why are you avoiding me?

–I'm not –Maeve responded quickly, a little too defensively

–Then why didn't you respond to my messages? I was worried –He said, his voice softening, almost pleading

Maeve shrugged, feeling the tension creeping up her neck –I just didn't want to argue with you again, that's all

–I don't want to fight anymore either –Cole sighed, running his hand through his hair –I really don't

Maeve crossed her arms, her posture stiff –Do you think that, or did one of your kook friends tell you? –Her words came out sharper than she intended, but she didn't care

–I saw it myself at the party yesterday –Cole said, his frustration slipping through –Jesus Maeve, JJ had a gun!

–Don't talk about JJ –Maeve's jaw clenched
