After the not very expected event at the lighthouse, Maeve had spent the rest of the afternoon thinking about the "almost kiss" she had with JJ earlier today. Like he flirted with her all the time and Maeve was used to it, but they had never gotten so close to each other that they could feel their own breathing. Plus she couldn't deny that she felt butterflies in her stomach as she talked to him today. JJ has always been her best friend, but after today it seems like she started to feel something more than that.
Maeve sat on her bed, the soft light from the lamp beside her warmly illuminating her room. She had returned home after a long shift at the club, and was now organizing the photos she had taken over the summer. The laughter and moments captured in the images made her smile, reminding her of the good times with her friends.
As she ran her fingers over a photo of JJ making faces at the camera, a sharp noise interrupted her concentration. The sound of a stone hitting the glass made Maeve look up in confusion. She glanced at her reflection in the window, her brow furrowed, and approached the glass, curiosity bubbling beneath her annoyance. Peering out, she saw John B standing on the sidewalk, a mischievous grin lighting up his face. His enthusiasm was infectious, even from a distance. Inside the Twinkie, she caught a glimpse of Pope and JJ, their silhouettes framed by the van's warm glow, waiting impatiently for her.
A mix of surprise and unease washed over her. She already knew why John B was there, the compass mystery seemed to never end, and she had hoped for a quiet night to unwind. Opening the window, the cool night air rushed in, ruffling her hair.
–What are you doing here? –She asked, trying to mask her curiosity with irritation
–Whatever you're doing can wait –John B said hurriedly, his excitement palpable as he bounced on his heels –May, we're about to make history!
–Are you concocting again? –She rolled her eyes, crossing her arms
–Yes, I'm concocting –He ran a hand through his tousled hair in agreement, his grin widening –I'm concocting more than I've ever concocted in my life
Maeve shook her head, fighting a smile –John B, can't you do this without me today?
–No, please! I need you for this one –He pleaded, his voice dropping to a serious tone as he clasped his hands together, a faux look of desperation on his face –Really, May, I'm begging you
She sighed deeply, glancing back at her unfinished sketch –I'm really not in the mood right now
–I'm begging, I'm begging you, I'm begging you! –He began to repeat like a child, his dramatic flair drawing a reluctant laugh from her
–Oh my God! Shut up! –She shouted, finally making him go quiet as she contemplated her response
After a moment, she relented, shaking her head with a resigned smile.
