Chapter 7
Nate
Asking Molly to take on Reese is like feeding a bunny to a coyote. He's going to tear her apart. I have a plan for her but my meeting later today will determine if we are ready to go big time for her. This meeting could give me a career after my time in baseball is up. This could help me in case this injury ends my career. I could be giving, not only Molly's career, but Kayleigh's career a boost. I just have to handle this right.
It was early for me to be up and running but I'm excited to get this ball rolling. I've got a lot on my plate the next few days and I'm going to be running on an adrenaline rush until I get through this mess. Today is going to be a challenge, no matter what happens.
"You want me to take on Reese?" Molly looks shocked and appalled by the suggestion. I thought they could manage it, that they could work out their differences. Maybe this isn't a good idea after all.
Nervously rubbing my hands on my thighs, I nod slowly. They haven't been getting along at all and here I am, throwing both of them into the fire. Is it a good idea to put them together? Maybe Kayleigh should split us instead of having her take Dillon. Damn, what should I do?
Hesitating, I question my initial instinct but inside I know this is best. Dillon will be easier on Kayleigh until we've got her trained. Reese needs Molly more than I do right now and I have Kayleigh. "Y..yes."
Her eyes bulged out, it's like watching a cartoon character with big bloodshot eyes, bouncing in and out of her head. Molly doesn't like change much. She likes simple and steady in her world. She makes minor adjustments when necessary, but overall, she keeps her schedule the same.
"Why? For years you've told him and me that this was a bad idea. You have been afraid for years that if I were to take him as a client, he would only want one thing!" Molly roars fiercely at me.
She's much more defensive and passionate about this than I expected her to be. She's not wrong. I've been worried about that from the beginning and I still am. I saw her go through heartbreak long ago, to this day, she won't tell me anything about it. I've gotten bits and pieces from her when she's been drunk but what she'll share is minimal. I still don't know who the asshole was.
"You can do this, Molly. I know you can handle Reese. You're not naive to his game anymore. You handled things just fine these last week's since Kayleigh started helping me. I know it's time to change things, plus it might be changing things for the better for us." I haven't said anything about my plan to anyone. I didn't want to jinx it.
Molly sighs, plopping down on her sofa. "What exactly are you talking about?"
I inhale deeply and prepare myself for her response. I don't know how Molly will take this. I walk to the window and stare out at the yard. There is so much to do around her place. Things will definitely be changing. "I've been working on something, just in case this injury is the end of baseball for me. I've got a good degree in business finance and I've talked to Matt McConnell, he's the best for a reason, Molly. You've seen what he's done for Blake and Derrick Bradford. If I can convince him to expand to baseball, if you and Kayleigh can work with him, I think you would have a great career. I still have to convince him to take us under his arm of the business..."
"You mean going from just family to mainstream? Have you told Dad?" Molly sits up straight and knows what this means.
Dad has been our manager this entire time and he's done well for us but he's not getting any younger and he's going to retire eventually. I just think it's time to let him enjoy the time he has left to do what he wants.
