My parents helped me with setting up the tent in the backyard before my sleepover. Leo was bringing his own, since we only had one, and it had been stored in the garage for awhile. Penelope and I would be sleeping in this tent together, while Leo and Tobey would be in his. I was excited when my dad set up an area where we could have a fire to roast hotdogs and marshmallows. My nerves started to kick in though when Leo's car pulled up in the evening, all my friends just going straight to where I was in the yard.
"Hi, I'm Leo." Leo formally introduced himself to my parents, even holding out his hand for my father to shake.
"Hi, it's nice to meet you," my dad said, giving him a nice smile.
"Yeah, McKenna's only said good things about you," my mom added, which made me blush faintly.
It became awkward after that, since no one knew what to say, but I could tell that my parents were impressed by how Leo carried himself. He was in a dark green button up shirt and a pair of blue jeans, probably trying to be less casual to impress them. I hoped he had backup clothes though, because it was pretty humid out, and even my yellow tank top with daisies on it was sticking to my skin.
"Well, we'll just leave you kids out here. If you need anything, we're right inside. And we'll leave the back door unlocked in case anyone needs to use the bathroom in the night," my mom mentioned.
Everyone nodded along as my dad left the food that he had just brought out. I could tell that my stomach was already on the verge of growling, since I struggled to eat lunch with how excited I was earlier.
"Alright, so are we eating first then," Leo checked.
"Yeah, I second that idea," Penelope piped up, all of us getting settled in lawn chairs as Leo started the fire with his lighter. We started cooking our hot dogs once there were decent flames, Penelope shrieking at one point.
"What's wrong," Tobey hurriedly asked.
"I accidentally set my hotdog on fire," she groaned, him helping to put it out. "Is it still okay to eat?"
"Yeah, but it just depends if you like it burned or not."
"I usually try to keep mine lightly cooked."
"Here, you can trade with mine. I think it's done anyway," he kindly offered.
"No, you don't have to do that," she lightly protested.
I cleared my throat a little bit, since the smoke was flying right in my face, so it made my allergies flare up. "There's more if you want to just get rid of that one," I told her.
"Okay, I think I'll just do that," she caved.
"You can still have mine. I mean, it's going to take time to cook a new one," Tobey pointed out.
"Not that long. It takes literal minutes."
"Just go ahead and take it," he urged.
I could tell that she was beginning to blush from his kind gesture, not arguing anymore as she accepted his food. I went ahead and moved my lawn chair, even though it meant not being next to Leo anymore. I kept feeling like I had to cough and blow my nose.
"You alright," Leo checked as he followed me with his own seat.
"Yeah, I was just getting the smoke right in my face." I coughed a little bit as he reached into his pants pocket.
"Here, I haven't used it yet." He held out a white handkerchief, which made me smile to myself.
"Thank you." I tried to use it without being noisy, tucking it safely into my own shorts pocket once I was finished.
