It was about time to leave the church picnic, and I was helping my aunt with gathering up her dishes. I was just about to follow her to the car after saying goodbye to Penelope when Leo ran over.
"Hey," he breathed, brushing his hair back with one hand. "I didn't know if I could have your number before you leave."
"Oh okay. I don't have anything to write it on though." I was looking around me when he shook his head.
"That's alright. You can just write it on my hand. I think the church brought some Sharpies today for labeling stuff." He went to find one of the black markers before coming back over.
"Are you sure you want it on your hand," I double checked as I took the cap off.
"Yeah, I'll make sure I put it on paper before it fades or anything."
I could feel myself blushing as I touched his warm skin, carefully writing each number out. "It's my parent's number." I felt the need to tell him that, since I didn't have my own personal phone.
"You don't have a cellphone?" He looked directly at me even though I kept my head lowered as I continued writing.
"No." I shook my head as I blushed a little bit.
"That's alright. I just thought we could text or something, but that's hard to do anyway on a flip phone," he lowly chuckled. "You want my number too in case you want to call me first?"
"Oh okay," I nearly stammered, heat searing through my arm when he gently grabbed my wrist facing upwards. "Can you write it on my arm?"
"What?" He looked at me amused as I tried not to blush more than I already was.
"I'm going to need to use the restroom after I leave, so, um, it might wash off my hands." I knew I could just use the public restroom, but I had wanted to wait until I was home to avoid it. It was fairly clean, but I still preferred to use mine at my house.
"Alright, you want it here so no one will really see it?" He was hovering the Sharpie over my inner elbow as I nodded, unable to stop turning red.
"Yeah, that's okay." It felt like I was holding my breath the entire time he scrawled the numbers out, almost sad when he let go of me. "Thanks."
"Thanks too," he quietly chuckled. "I thought we could, uh, hang out sometime this week or something. You know, if you weren't going to be in church on Sunday. I know you just come with your aunt sometimes."
"That could be fun. What did you have in mind?"
"Maybe like a drive-in movie. They're showing a bunch of great ones this week."
"We can talk about it later. You know when one of us calls," I added, nearly tripping over my words like he was.
"Alright. I'll see you soon, McKenna."
"Oh. Did I tell you my name? I can't remember," I admitted.
"I don't know, but I heard Penelope saying it a lot...," he trailed off, his own face slightly rosy.
I just smiled before we waved bye to each other, me soon leaving with my aunt.
Even though I had Leo's number, I just kept waiting by the white cordless phone hoping that he would call first. I was too nervous to be the one who initiated the call. My heart leapt in my throat when I came home one day after going out for lunch with my parents. There was a new message on the answering machine and it was just for me.
"Hey, it's Leo. Um, I'm guessing you're not home, but I was just calling to ask if you wanted to go to the drive-in this Thursday? They're playing Shrek 2 and then The Notebook. I think it ends at like 11:30 or midnight, so let me know if you can go. I'll pick you up and everything. Bye."
