It was nice feeling a little more confident when I went with my aunt to her church Sunday. The minute that Penelope spotted me during Sunday school she went right up to me.
"Hey, I'm so happy that you decided to come back today," she beamed, giving me a hug before leading me to one of the round tables. "We should be studying Genesis today, since we've gone back to the beginning of the Bible."
"Okay, I can't wait for the lesson," I earnestly said. Even though I did come to see Leo again, the thought of studying that book in the Bible sounded exciting. I had gotten into a bad habit of not going to church as often as I should. I could feel my heart instantly speeding up when Leo entered the room with a guy with dark brown hair. Leo smiled widely at me before coming over, pulling back a chair at our table.
"Hey, this is my best friend, Tobey," Leo introduced before I could wonder who he was long.
"Oh, hi," I managed to say as I felt my cheeks heating up. I tended to get shy around strangers, but I knew that Leo had spoken highly of him.
"Hey, it's nice to finally meet you. Leo's been talking about you nonstop since you met," he brought up, causing Leo to elbow him in the ribs. "Ow!"
"I swear you're just as bad as Brad," the blonde accused as he ran his hand through his hair.
"Hey, you two have already been on a date, right? And you kissed..."
"You kissed," Penelope exclaimed, causing half the room to stare at us. That embarrassed me more than anything Tobey had said so far.
"I just kissed her on the cheek," Leo quietly confessed, his own cheeks rosy from all the eyes on us.
"That's so cute," Penelope gushed, everyone minding their own business again.
"So, what are you doing after church today," Leo directly asked me, his hands joined on the tabletop.
"Um, I didn't have any plans," I admitted, chancing to look over at him as those ocean eyes stole my breath away.
"I was going to pick up a book or two from the library upstairs. Would you want to all get ice cream together? I was going to go to the ice cream shop after," Penelope shared.
"Okay, that sounds like fun," I smiled a little. "Wouldn't that ruin our lunch though?"
"I think they might serve some regular food there too."
"Oh yeah, I forgot about that. You meant the actual little cafe, right? Not just the ice cream building?"
"Right," she confirmed, since we had multiple places to get the sugary treat from.
I was about to say something else when the youth minister came into the room. He seemed so positive as he started speaking the Word of God. I dreaded when he had people take turns reading scripture aloud though. I kept worrying that he would call on me, but thankfully it didn't happen. He explained everything thoroughly and everyone shared their own insights on the passages. I felt a joy in my chest that I could only get from spending time with the Lord after the hour was over. Everyone started heading upstairs to where all the pews were, and I could feel myself blushing, since my hand kept brushing against Leo's on the narrow staircase. I thought I would have to separate from the group, but my aunt ended up only sitting one row in front of Leo's mom. Penelope was behind them, along with Tobey and their families. I went ahead and sat directly next to my Aunt Gloria, but I kept peeking behind me at Leo. He would smile every time our eyes would briefly meet and it made me feel warm inside. I knew that my face was red as a tomato when Leo shook my hand during the greeting part of the service.
"Hi, it's nice to meet you," he joked, his eyes twinkling.
"It's nice to meet you too," I nearly laughed, savoring how warm his palm felt against mine.
