I was a nervous wreck the morning of the church picnic, unable to decide what to wear. I just kept sifting through all of my t-shirts, just hoping that one might catch my eye. Eventually I just went with a dark green one with white on the end of the short sleeves. It also had the number, 75 on the left side of my chest. I just paired that with jean shorts that stopped close to my knees, since I knew it would be a hot day. The summer weather was finally in full swing with the highs near the middle 80's in Fahrenheit. I went ahead and curled my golden blonde hair to make myself look a little more fancy, pushing my thin bangs over a bit for more of a side part. The moment I saw my aunt pull up in her silver car I was dashing straight out the front door. She was smiling when she saw how fast that I was moving.

"You must be really excited for the church picnic," she subtly teased. I think her intuition was kicking in that there was a specific reason that I was anxious to attend.

"Yeah," I weakly smiled as I got situated better in the passenger seat. I watched the bright green scenery as it passed in a blur, constantly reminding myself not to jiggle my leg from nerves. Once we pulled up to the place where the picnic was being held I could feel my heart leaping into my throat. There were already kids running around everywhere and people setting out the food that they brought. Even though they were grilling hotdogs and hamburgers, it was also a bit of a potluck. I kept trying to subtly scan the area, desperate to spot Leo before he did me, since I didn't want to be taken by surprise.

"You looking for someone," my aunt wondered, that familiar smirk tugging at her lips.

"Uh...," I trailed off, not sure how to get myself out of this one now.

"Hey, you came," I heard a familiar, deeper voice suddenly say, causing me to nearly jump out of my skin.

"Oh, hi," I reacted, hoping that I didn't sound as stupid as I felt.

"So, that's who you were looking for," my aunt said only loud enough for me to hear. Thankfully Leo had gotten distracted by having to help his mom with the food she brought, so he didn't hear my aunt. "I should've known, since you were acting odd when he came into the ice cream shop the other day."

"Yeah, we haven't talked much, but I told him I was coming here today." I could already feel the blush rising to my cheeks, hoping it wouldn't stick around for the entire day. I was grateful when she got busy too with helping to set out the dessert. Of course now I was standing by myself with my arms crossed. I just kept looking down at the grass as I moved my yellow sneakers across it.

"Are you going to be swimming later?" I looked up to find that Leo was speaking to me again. I tucked my hair behind my ear as I lifted my head, deciding that I would do my best to ignore my shyness seeping through.

"No, I didn't bring a swimsuit or anything," I answered.

"Me and a few of the guys brought our swimming trunks, so we might get in the lake later." He tucked his hands into his pockets as he was the one now looking at the ground. I couldn't imagine him being shy with how gorgeous he was, so I was starting to worry that I was boring him.

"So, what have you been doing this summer?" I literally just said the first thing that popped into my mind.

"Mostly just helping out with VBS and hanging out with my best friend, Tobey. He didn't come here today, since he had a lawn mowing job to do."

I nodded a little bit as I thought for a moment about what to say next. "Do you ever mow lawns?"

"Yeah, sometimes. It's a really good way to make money without having to actually take up a regular job. I've been practicing my acting a lot this summer too," he softly chuckled.
