Cassie

I'm trying to bury myself out of the pile of documents in Beau's living room. She left me her iPad but that means she won't be able to respond if I need her.

Goddess, please send her back soon.

I feel Nico's presence in my mind. He's been acclimating well into the pack, quietly. But he's still making an effort despite to coldness some pack mates are showing him. Most are cordial but only because he's my mate and I'm Beau's beta.

Val and Iris saunter in carrying woven arm baskets filled with fresh produce that needs a wash. Iris is the first in the kitchen, washing all the vegetables in the sink while Val makes her way over to me.

I don't life my eyes from the screen as I type out next weeks pack schedule.

"Hi Val." I say monotonously.

"Hey Cassie." She says taking a seat across from me her eyes scanning over each of the documents. "Is this for the lycans?" Her hands reaching out as she with nimble fingers, slips through some of the pages.

"Yeah, there some papers about the renting plots of land and supplies list so they can start building....their houses...." I trail off, typing faster on the screen, my fingers itching to finish the task.

I'm almost done with the last sentence before Val snatches the iPad out of my lap. I look up at her some mix of annoyance and shock on my face.

"Well if these are Lycan matters then-" I don't even let her finish the sentence before I snatch the tablet back. Not even entertaining her as I finish the document and send it off. Saying nothing as I start on the next task.

"Cassie, you maybe should take a break for now?" Iris suggests.

"No. Beau doesn't take breaks." I say and before I can set up the next page, the tablet is forced out of my hands again.

"Well, you're not Beau." Val says and I snatch it back once again letting out a threatening growl. Val responds, her eyes scanning me up and down flashing a bright blue.

"I'm her fucking beta." I spit out. "She left me in charge. Not you."

Iris clearly sensing the hostility tries to calm the situation.

"Cassie we were just trying to help." She says softly.

"No!" I shout my anger sky rockets. "You two are only responsible for teaching classes and maintaining your lesson plans, which you haven't even fucking submitted yet! And still you're on some kind of ego trip just because your mate is beta to the king? This pack is not part of that!" I seeth and Val bristles at my hostility.

"What are you getting at?" Val growls back this time.

I waste no time getting in her face, baring my fangs in a sarcastic smile. "I'm saying, that if Beau wanted you have anything to do with running a pack that has no alliance to the crown, she would have said so. But I'm her beta, not you. I'm the second in command, not you."

She looks genuinely angry that I said that. Her eyes widening and her mouth looking to form words.

"You think you're capable to deciding Lycan affairs? You are not Lycan." She says.

"Well aware." I quip. "But I am the person in charge right now, and if I wanted, I could have your little relocation application denied, and you and your mate would be stuck with the snooty bitches back at the palace. And it's not lycan affairs, it's pack affairs. You seemingly would know anything about that would you." I taunt.

"You know what?!" Val's anger rises but Iris stops it.

"OKAY!" Iris intervenes getting in between us. Pushing Val and me away from each other as she tries her best to be the voice of reason.
