Laura speed walked through the forest short cut until she reached the entrance, most of the legion enlistees were strolling or waiting for their newfound friends to walk with while sharing their excitement for the final day. Unfortunately Laura could not enjoy that luxury.
She gazed up at the sky, it was nearing sunset, her mother would lecture her ear out once she got home. Her speed walk turned into a jog, she made sure no one saw her enter the thicket as she ventured to her cottage.

Laura slowly pushed open the front door, the loud creek made her cringe. She shut it as silently as possible and turned to see her mother standing near the dining table looking livid.

"Look who decided to come home ?" She said irked, her eyes glaring through Laura

Laura closed her eyes, mentally preparing herself to face the wrath of her mother. She opened them and chose to smile sweetly

"Hi mom " she greeted, entering the living room which was three steps away

Her mother held up a colorful piece of paper and waved it frantically at her

"Look what I found in your room" she hissed

It was the enlistment flyer Dayne gave her along with the battle gear.

"The legion enlistment, which if I'm not mistaken is today and, correct me if I'm wrong is the reason why you're covered in mud " she said as she took slow strides to her

"That's correct " Laura ensured dropping the sweet act

To her surprise, her mother laughed hysterically "You can't be serious. "

"I am. Very serious "

"Did you even get in ?"

"I'm in the top 500, tomorrow is the final, where they'll be choosing the official legion knights of Cyprise " Laura answered calmly

She deliberately didn't mention she was the first out of that 500, her mother didn't deserve to know such an accomplishment.

"That's too bad, you're not going" her mother stated firmly

"I am. Whether you like it or not." Laura shot back

Her mom's expression morphed from tranquil authority to a deep-seated disappointment, the warmth in her eyes began to chill.

"Laura, I am your mother...I am not going to watch you throw away your life like this. You will stay in this house even if I have to chain you to it myself !" She yelled crumpling the flyer

"I dare you. Even chains can't hold me !" She yelled back

Her mother paced around, furiously brushing her hands through her hair. Laura took the opportunity to keep speaking

"That is what grandma Bailey would have wanted, this is what I want "

Her mother scoffed and stared at her with disbelief "Enough with that Laura! We all want something, do you think this is where I want to be, how I want to be living my life? No, no it's not but do I have a choice? No, no I don't. That applys to you too Laura, leave this childhood dream to die and snap back into reality for goodness sakes !"

"I am not you mom, I will not allow my dream to die like you did. "

"Exactly, you are not me my child, you have your whole life ahead of you to learn to be a better cook, marry a better and richer man and never have to struggle "

"Enough with this marriage thing mom! I can make a name for myself without marrying someone rich !"

Her mother forced out a laugh and stormed to Laura till they were just inches from each other, she pointed a finger at her staring at her with empty eyes, devoid of love
