A few days had passed, and Jungkook sat across from his lawyer, Mr. Xiao, in a sleek, modern office. The quiet hum of the air conditioning filled the silence as Jungkook’s thoughts swirled. He had gone over this in his head so many times, but the weight of the decision was still heavy on his chest. His hands rested on the edge of the leather chair, fingers tapping softly as he stared at the neatly arranged papers on the lawyer’s desk.
Mr. Xiao, a sharp-eyed man with a calm demeanor, glanced over his glasses at Jungkook, sensing the tension in the air. He shifted slightly in his chair, folding his hands on the desk in front of him as he studied Jungkook's expression.
"Are you absolutely sure about this, Mr. Jeon?" Mr. Xiao asked, his voice gentle but firm. "You’ve mentioned before that things weren’t going well between you and Yeri, but divorce is a serious step, especially considering your son."
Jungkook sighed deeply, running a hand through his hair as he nodded. "I’ve thought about this for a long time, Mr. Xiao," he began, his voice low but resolute. "I’ve tried, I’ve tried everything. But I can’t do it anymore. Yeri and I... there’s nothing left between us."
Mr. Xiao sat back in his chair, observing Jungkook carefully. "You mentioned that you spoke to her about this, but she’s not in agreement. Is that correct?"
Jungkook clenched his jaw, memories of the heated conversations he’d had with Yeri flashing through his mind. "She doesn’t want to let go," he admitted. "Even though she cheated on me, both before and after Jungwoo was born. She acts like that doesn’t matter, like it was some mistake we can just move past. But I can’t. I’ve tried to forgive her, to make it work for the sake of Jungwoo, but…" His voice trailed off as frustration and exhaustion crept in. "It’s over. She knows it, but she refuses to accept it."
Mr. Xiao raised an eyebrow, taking in the information carefully. "Infidelity complicates things, especially when one party is unwilling to cooperate. Have you considered the possibility of mediation before taking this step?"
Jungkook shook his head, his fists clenching in his lap. "We’ve been in mediation, we’ve done counseling, and it’s always the same. Yeri refuses to face reality. She wants to hold on to something that’s already gone. She’s... she’s holding on for the wrong reasons."
Mr. Xiao nodded, flipping through the papers in front of him. "I understand. If she’s unwilling to cooperate, we will have to approach this carefully. Given that she’s the one who committed infidelity, that may play a role in the custody arrangements, as well as the division of assets. What are your main concerns going forward?"
"Jungwoo," Jungkook answered immediately. "He’s my priority. I need to make sure this doesn’t hurt him any more than it already has. I don’t want him stuck in the middle of a messy divorce, and I want custody. Yeri knows this too. She knows if it comes down to it, I’m more capable of taking care of him."
Mr. Xiao nodded thoughtfully. "With the infidelity on her part and your stable position, you may have a strong case for primary custody, but these cases can get complicated when emotions are involved. How is your relationship with Jungwoo right now?"
Jungkook’s face softened at the mention of his son. "He’s my world. We’ve been spending more time together lately, and... I just want him to be happy. He deserves a life where his parents aren’t fighting all the time, where he can see what real love looks like. And it’s not what Yeri and I have."
Mr. Xiao listened intently, his expression professional yet empathetic. "If you’re certain this is the direction you want to take, we can start the process. However, it may take time, especially if Yeri contests the divorce or fights for custody. Are you prepared for that?"
