"Spot?" Charlie said on the other side of the door. "Spot?" She knocked hard again, louder this time. She finally decided to go in. Her jaw dropped when she saw his room. There was a hole in one of the walls, things were out of place, overturned and tossed everywhere, the mirror had a long jagged crack through the middle of it, and worst of all, she could see blood in different places on the wall and floor. Spot was sitting on the floor in the corner. He wasn't wearing a shirt, so she could clearly see long bloody scratches on his chest. He looked as if he'd seen a ghost.
"Spot! What the hell happened??"
He seemed to awake from a trance. "Charlie?"
She went over to him and tried to help him stand up, but his knees buckled under him and he almost fell.
"I'se thought you'se hated me."
"Not now. Tell me what happened. Did you'se do this?"
"Hell no!!"
"Then who did?"
"It's a long story that ya didn't want ta hear. I'se believe those were you're exact words."
"Well I'se listenin' now. Gabriel."
He smiled as they settled themselves on the floor. "Ok Charlotte."
"You'se not allowed ta call me Charlotte."
"I'se think I'se get a free pass."
"No."
"Well I'se like it."
She blushed.
He smirked. He loved it when she blushed. Then he tried his best to
explain everything without breaking down. Charlie couldn't believe what she was hearing. So much was going through her mind as she was trying to process everything being said."No..."
He hugged her, tears rolling down both of their faces.
"I'm so so sorry..."
"You'se didn't know, it's ok."
"No it's not. It's not ok. I'se should've listened--"
"Don't do that it's not your fault. It's not your fault."
"Tell me where she is so I'se can beat her ass---"
"No! Whateva you'se do just stay away from her! Don't go near her eva!--"
She stroked his punctured wrists and shuddered.
"I'se not gonna let her keep doin' dis ta you'se! Why didn't ya do somethin'??"
"She said she was gonna hurt you'se."
"What?"
"She's tougher than she looks and she's manipulative and..."
"No one can hurt me."
"I'se thought I'se did."
She kissed him softly. "I'm sorry. I'se didn't listen an I'se could've saved you from all of this. I'se wish I'se wouldn't have punched you'se."
"Yeah I'se wish dat too. Ya knocked da air outta me. But it's ok. How'd ya find out bout, ya know?"
"Race."
"If he wasn't so nice he could be a Brooklyn newsie. He's in Brooklyn enough."
"I'se know. He loves the Sheepshead races."
"If it weren't for the races his name would be 'Ace' cuz he always beats everyone in cards."
"I'se swear he cheats."
He laughed and put an arm around her.
"What made ya come back?"
"Race."
"Oh really?"
"Well, it was mostly him. He told me a Brooklyn newsie said dat no one saw you'se in days an heard screamin' from ya room at night. I'se got worried."
"Why? Like I'se said I'se thought you'se hated me."
"How could I really hate you'se? I'se looked mad but I'se was really just upset. I'se still in love wit you'se."
"I'se would neva hurt ya."
"I'se knows dat now. It's just..."
"What?"
"When you're like me...and you'se neva trusted no one and when ya do it's just--"
"Terrifyin'."
She cupped his face in her hands and kissed him. "Exactly."
"I'se love you'se."
"I'se love you'se too. C'mon let's get you'se cleaned up."
"I'se still can't walk."
"I'd carry you'se ta da ends of the earth if I'se had ta."
She tried her best to help him stand, and after much trying she successfully carried him to the bed. She quickly ran downstairs to get the first aid kit. When she returned, she started to slowly clean and patch his wounds. She iced his bruises and kissed his head once she was done.
"All better."
"Not even close."
"I ain't a doctor."
"It's nothing you'se can fix unless ya can change da past."
"I'se won't eva understand completely how it felt, but I'se know how horrible it would be for me if it was the otha way around. I'se can't imagine eva..."
"I'll be ok. The only person I'se eva wanna do dat wit again is you'se."
"You're not tired of me yet?"
"How could anyone get tired of you'se?"
"A lot of people could very easily get tired of me."
"Forget them. All that matters right now is you, and me, and how much dis is gonna hurt but I'se won't care anyways."
"Are you'se sure dats a good idea?"
"What the hell."
"I'se love you'se, King of Brooklyn."
