"The battle of willow creek, took place right at the end of the war." Adeline's mind was elsewhere as Mr Tanner taught at the front of the classroom. She hadn't been able to think straight since she went to the Salvatore house yesterday. She'd even avoided Caroline. "It was in our very own mystic falls. How many casualties resulted in this battle?"
He looked around for someone to answer. Adeline unconsciously making herself smaller in an attempt to go unnoticed. He finally called upon Bonnie. Startling her as she looked up from the notes she was taking.
"Umm.." she thought for a moment. "A lot? I'm not sure, like a whole lot."
Mr. Tanner ticked his tongue as she answered. "Cute becomes dumb in an instant, miss Bennett." His eyes looked around the room for his next victim. Landing in the other side of Adeline on Matt.
"Mr, Donavan! Would you like to take this opportunity to overcome your embedded jock stereotype?" Matt let a half smile fall on his face as he sat back. A slight wave for effect.
"No im good with it." Mr. Tanner clicked his tongue before looking at Elena.
"Hmm, Elena?" She looked up at him as he called her name.
"I'm sorry I have no idea." Elena answered honestly.
"I was willing to be lenient last year, for obvious reasons, but your free pass ended with summer break." Adeline bit her tongue as Tanner berated Elena.
"There were 345 casualties." Stefan spoke up in an attempt to keep the attention off of Elena. "Unless you're counting local civilians."
Tanner looked a bit shocked. "That's correct." He nodded slightly. "Mr...?"
"Salvatore."
"Salvatore? Any relation to the original settlers here at mystic falls?" Tanner took a small step forward.
A short pause. "Distant."
"Well, very good." Mr Tanner walked back to his desk. He leaned against slightly, a small smile forming on his lips. "Except of course there were no civilian casualties in this battle."
"Actually there were 27. sir." Adeline was the first one to let out a giggle as Stefan humbled Mr Tanner slightly. "Confederate soldiers, they fired on a church believing it to be housing weapons. They were wrong. It was a night of great loss."
Something about the way Stefan spoke felt haunted. Like the loss was to him personally. It spooked Adeline, twisting in her seat as he spoke.
"The founders archives are stored in civil hall if you like to brush up on your facts." Again Adeline was the first to laugh with the rest of the class following along.
The bell rang loudly with Adeline immediately standing up. She attempted to move past Stefan's desk but he blocked her way by standing in front of her. She knew he would question her.
"Yes?" She asked with feigned indifference. She swallowed hard as she looked up at his face. "If this is about yesterday, I don't know what that was. You can just forget about it."
Stefan shook his head. He knew she was lying. She had to be. "You can trust me." Adeline's heart twinged. She looked deep into his eyes. She knew she could, it seemed easy to trust him, she just didn't know if she should. "Whatever's happening to you, you can tell me."
She looked at him for another long moment before she made the move to walk past him. Once she was past his shoulder she stopped. "Not now. Tonight."
He nodded slightly at her. A signal to let her know that he understood her hesitation. Without another word she slipped out of the classroom and into the hallway. The weight of her decision suffocating her as she walked slowly down the hall. She hadn't heard the slight footsteps behind her until a hand grabbed her arm.
