Adeline rubbed her hands together as she stood in front of the door. The dark oak called her name, telling her to just knock already. She knew it was a bad idea. A terrible idea. Possibly a deadly idea. She pulled her hand up ready to hit her knuckles against the ornate wood door.
The door swung open before she could make contact, revealing Damon Salvatore. His eyes pierced hers as a smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.
He leaned against the door frame with his arms crossed. He was wearing a navy blue button up that was two thirds of the way buttoned. His hair was messy as if hands had been run through it.
"Well, if it isn't my favorite blonde." He grabbed a curl as he spoke to the girl. He tossed it slightly to the side. "What do I owe the pleasure?"
She pushed him slightly to the side as she walked into the house. As she heard the door shut she turned around to look at him. He stood with his arms crossed, his back to the door.
"No please, Adeline, come right in." Damon sighed, a bit annoyed. Adeline stared at him for a long moment before he stepped closer to her. "Did you need something or did you just plan to come stare at me all night?"
Adeline swallowed. " the other day, the story you told about Clara, you talked like you knew her." She swallowed she ran a hand through her hair. "Which is totally impossible. I mean it's been 143 years since she died And you're only 25."
Damon had a smirk on his face as he continued to let Adeline speak. "So tell me why it is damon," she took a step closer to him this time. "That you someone that was born in 1984, speak so fondly of someone born in 1846." She took another step closer. "Why is it you called me her name?"
Damon looked shocked for a moment before replacing it with his regular bravado. Damon raised an eyebrow at the girl, not sure whether to be impressed with her boldness or amused. His eyes flickered with something as he moved to lean against the doorframe for the parlor.
"I don't know what you're talking about?" Damon's voice was low and teasing.
Adeline's frustration only grew as she stared at the man in front of her she stepped another foot closer. She felt the tension the closer she stepped to him, the pull of unsaid words hanging in between them. She knew he was hiding something.
"Don't play coy with me Damon." Another step closer. "I want the truth." Another one. "I need the truth." Another step closer until she was right in front of him. "You knew Clara, somehow you knew her."
Damon was several inches away as he stared down at her. It took him a long minute to answer but when he did his voice was stern. "You're treading in some really dangerous waters right now blondie. They're are things you don't understand, things you really shouldn't want to know."
She swallowed the tension she felt between them was something she shouldn't be feeling. "I won't let you scare me damon." It was almost a whisper.
Damon clicked his tongue as he leaned closer to the girl. "You pincers' so persistent." Adeline's face scrunched up in confusion. " I'm not trying to scare you, blondie." He tapped her on the nose. "I'm trying to warn you."
She shoved his hand away from her. " I'm not asking for your protection damon. I'm asking for answers. What is it you're hiding?"
Damon chucked. His eyes never leaving Adeline. "You think you're the first one to come demanding answers, to try and unlock secrets from the past?" His voice was a mix of his usual teasing and something else, something darker. "I'm giving you the chance to walk away, before you dive into something you can't handle."
Adeline steeled herself as she stared at Damon. "I won't let you deter me, Damon. I need to know the truth. I need to know why you called me Clara."
