Today was the day. I was about to start my internship at Seattle Grace Hospital. Derek thankfully managed to get me into the program last minute. I woke up early, took a shower, had breakfast and got ready. It took me some time to realise that Derek was not home. The night before, he told me that he was going out to get to know Seattle a little better. I was supposed to join him, but decided to stay in, in order to get enough sleep before my first shift. Just as I was about to call him, he texted me: "Good morning, Lola. I met up with a friend last night and decided to stay over at his place, since it was really late and I didn't want you to wake up. I hope you weren't too worried. I'll see you at the hospital. Don't be nervous, you got this!" Weird. Derek doesn't even have friends in Seattle, we only arrived here some time ago. I decided not to think about it too much and made my way to Seattle Grace.
When I got there, I saw Derek waiting for me at the parking lot. We hugged and made our way to the entrance. "Nervous?", he said. "I almost shit my pants on the way here" We both laughed. Seeing him getting better and better after what Addison did to him, makes me really happy. The past few weeks she's been trying to reach out to any of our family members just to get Derek and I to speak to her. She was like a sister and my best friend. Ignoring her hurts me a lot. But it hurts even more to know that she would do something like that to our family. So moving to Seattle was a good idea. We got away from our past life and today, our new one begins.
"So, now our ways are parting. I hope you have a great first shift as an intern. You'll crush it, I'm sure. And if you need anything, you know where to find me." "Thanks, Derek. I hope you have a great first day at work, too! You're the best neurosurgeon i know." He laughed and gave me a hug, before he made his way down the hall. I joined the other interns waiting for Dr. Webber to show us around, before we made our way to the changing rooms. While putting on my scrubs, I overheard three interns talking about Dr. Bailey aka the Nazi. Since that was the resident I was also assigned to, I decided to join their conversation. "Hi, I'm Charlotte, but you know, you can call me Charlie. I was also assigned to Dr. Bailey." Being this nice isn't really my biggest strength, but it wasn't as bad as I thought. "Are you the model everyone was talking about?", Cristina Yang asked. "What?", I said.
Before we could continue our conversation, a man called up our names and we made our way to Dr. Bailey. As we were walking down the hall, we were asking ourselves why someone would call a 5 foot woman with a bob the Nazi. Another intern, Izzie Stevens, joined us and said: "Maybe it's professional jealousy. Maybe she's brilliant and they call her a Nazi because they're jealous. Maybe she's nice." Cristina and I looked at each other before she said: "Let me guess. You're the model." When we arrived at the end of the hall, it didn't even take a minute for us to understand why people gave Dr. Bailey her nickname. As she explained her rules to us, we were paged to a young patient, Katie Bryce, who was admitted because of a seizure. Dr. Bailey assigned me and Meredith Grey to get Katie Bryce a head CT. From that moment on, I had to give my everything, because Derek told me that the best intern had the chance to perform a procedure during their first shift. And that intern had to be me.
