I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my reflection in the mirror. The morning light was barely creeping trough the blinds, painting everything in a dull blue. I knew I had to get up, but something felt - well, wrong.
I couldn't put my finger on it, but it was there, gnawing at the edges of my mind. It wasn't the usual pre-shift anxiety. I've been through enough surgeries, emergencies and sleepless night to handle that. This feeling was something different.
I rubbed my hands over my face, trying to snap myself out of it. Get it together, Lola. It's just another day.
Standing up, I moved trough the motions. Clothes. Shoes. Hair pulled back. My fingers fumbled as I buttoned my top, the fabric feeling heavy in my hands. My reflection in the mirror caught my eye again, unsettling me. Maybe I just didn't get enough sleep last night.
I walked into the kitchen, poured myself some coffee and leaned against the counter, staring out the window, while my mind was somewhere else. I glanced at the clock. It's fine. You're fine. You've done this a thousand times. It's just a shift like any other.
I grabbed my bag, slinging it over my shoulder and walked out of the door. But the feeling didn't leave. It was still there, like a shadow following me, whispering that something wasn't right. I ignored it, telling myself that once I'm at work, it'll fade.
--------
At the hospital, I joined the other interns waiting for a case to come in. Alex and Izzie were arguing, per usual.
"Which surgeon are we having to suck up to today?", Cristina asked.
"That would be me.", a familiar voice said. We turned around, spotting Bailey, who's been on maternity leave for some time now.
"I've been gone two weeks, two weeks and you ran off two residents? I've got people phoning me, telling me my interns are Rosemary's Babies. Nobody wants you. Do you think I have time for this? I am pregnant. I'm supposed to be on bed rest. I'm growing a human being. I'm supposed to be calm. Do I look calm to you? Did I raise you fools to be pariahs?"
Before one of us could say anything, George stepped forward and gave Bailey a hug, leaving all of us confused.
"You're back.", he said.
"I'm not back."
"You're not?"
"Get off me."
Suddenly, sirens started blaring. "Yang, Karev, Grey and Shepherd. Stay here and wait for the incoming case. O'Malley, page Addison Shepherd and Stevens, get a wheelchair.", Bailey said, a little calmer than before.
--------
The incoming case was a man with an injury to his chest. Hannah Davies, a paramedic, stuck her hand inside of him to stop him from bleeding out, which is why she had to come to the OR with us. The weird feeling was still there, but I was happy that Burke chose me to assist him on this surgery.
