I opened the door of the apartment with a smile because my boyfriend went grocery shopping.
I swung open the apartment door, a bright smile spreading across my face. My heart skipped a beat as I anticipated Rudra's reaction to my outfit. Yesterday's conversation still lingered in my mind - "From now on, you're my girlfriend and I'm your boyfriend" The words felt clichéd yet wonderfully intimate.
As I stood there, drying my hair with a fluffy towel, my dupatta hung effortlessly over my right shoulder, its delicate fabric dancing with every movement. My outfit was simple yet elegant - a pastel pink kurta with intricate embroidery, paired with comfortable white pajamas. The combination made me feel feminine and radiant.
I opened the door only to freeze in surprise.
"Didi!" Akshita squealed, her tiny arms wrapping tightly around my knees, nearly toppling me over. I laughed, surprised by the force of her hug. As I knelt down, Akshita's face buried in my neck, her warm breath on my skin sent shivers down my spine. I enveloped her in a tight hug, feeling her tiny heartbeat against mine.
"Did you miss me, my little munchkin?" I whispered, peppering kisses on her forehead. Akshita nodded vigorously, her tears soaking my shoulder. "I missed you so, so much, Didi!" she sobbed, her voice trembling. My heart swelled with love and guilt, realizing how much she'd missed me. I deepened the hug, trying to make up for lost time.
As I glanced up, Mama and Mami stood before me, their eyes shining with warmth. I bent down to touch their feet, seeking their blessings.
"God bless you, beta," Mama said, her hand on my head, her voice filled with affection.
"May your life be filled with love and happiness." Mami's eyes misted as she added, "May you always be the guiding light in Akshita's life."
I felt a lump form in my throat as I rose, Akshita still clinging to me.
"Come in, please," I said, gesturing to the apartment.
Mama settled onto the couch, taking a sip of water. "We're sorry we missed your birthday, beta. Akshita's exams were around the same time."
I smiled reassuringly. "It's okay, Mama ji. I understand. Akshita's education comes first."
Akshita looked up, her big brown eyes sparkling.
"Didi, we got you a late birthday gift!" she exclaimed, rummaging through her bag. My heart overflowed with love as I watched her eager face.
As Akshita presented me with a handmade card, adorned with colorful stickers and a wobbly drawing of us together, tears pricked at the corners of my eyes.
"This is the best gift ever, Akshita," I whispered, hugging her tightly.
In this moment, surrounded by loved ones, I felt grateful for the simple joys in life. Akshita snuggled deeper into my lap, her tiny hands playing with my dupatta. I felt complete, my heart filled with love and contentment.
