look at me posting a valentine's themed story in october. today is national boyfriend day so i guess it works

...

Valentine's Day was chilly and overcast, the kind of day that felt more fitting for cozy blankets all alone in the dark rather than romantic outings with someone you loved. Jisung was pacing in his room, glancing at his phone for updates.

His best friend, Minho, had been excited about spending the day with a guy from his work who had asked him out, but when those plans fell through, Jisung knew as Minho's best friend, he had to step in. He couldn't let Minho spend the day feeling down.

"Okay, you got this," he muttered to himself, "Just make him smile," Jisung muttered to himself, grabbing his jacket and heading out. When he arrived at Minho's apartment, he knocked softly, trying to hide his nervousness. The door creaked open, revealing Minho with slightly droopy eyes and a half-hearted smile. He looked so deflated, and Jisung's heart ached for him. "Hey, Minho," Jisung said, forcing a smile, "What's up?"

"Nothing obviously," Minho tried to joke, but his face showed how hut he was by being stood up so last minute.  "Ready for a little adventure?" Jisung asked, trying to shove happiness into his words. Minho shrugged, shuffling back into his apartment, "Not sure how adventurous it can be. I had other plans, but..." He trailed off, the disappointment evident in his tone.

Jisung stepped inside, closing the door behind him. "Forget the other plans. We're going to have a great time! So get ready; we're going out!" Minho blinked, a mix of surprise and hesitation in his eyes. "But I—"

"No 'buts'! You deserve a day full of fun, and I'm going to make that happen," Jisung insisted, grabbing Minho's wrist and pulling him into his bedroom. As minho stood there, Jisung went through his closet, pulling out different clothing items that would be fit for the weather and tossing them towards his older friend.

"Hey! I got this for you two years ago! Why is it in the back of your closet!?" Jisung held up a sweatshirt with a sticker of his own face on the front. "Because it's weird," Minho said putting on the baggy jeans that Jisung had thrown on him.  "You're weird. I'm the normal one in this friendship."

"I like normal. But a hoodie with you face on it is not normal," Minho argued, holding the item in his hands. Jisung put his hands on his hips, "Just for that, you're wearing it for today. Put it on." Minho stuck out his bottom lip in protest, but Jisung had mastered the art of denying it after they had been friends so long.

Eventually, Minho put on the rest of his clothes and  the two made their way out. Their first stop was a little café known for its pastries. Jisung was selfish with this stop, because he really needed an iced americano and a slice of cheesecake to get through the day. As they entered, the warm air enveloped them, and the sweet aroma of baked goods made Minho's empty stomach rumble.

"Look at those cookies." Jisung pointed out, his enthusiasm infectious, "they're cat shaped." Minho couldn't help but chuckle. "You're like a kid in a candy store."

"Only because I'm here with my favorite person," Jisung replied, winking at the older as he ordered for them. As they sat at a table in the corner, Jisung began regaling Minho with funny stories, trying to coax a smile from him. At first, Minho seemed distant, but with each laugh, he began to open up. By the time they finished their food, a glimmer of happiness had returned to Minho's eyes.

"Okay, maybe this isn't the worst day after all," Minho admitted, leaning back in his chair with a contented sigh. "Duh, no day could be considered 'the worst' when you're spending it with me. Now, let's go for a walk, my right leg is completely numb and I think that old man is burning holes in my head." Minho looked over Jisung's shoulder and indeed there was an elderly man whose face held a harsh glare at the two men sitting togethers. So Minho agreed to leave and they made their way to a nearby park, where the sun was covered by clouds that contrasted with the playground filled with laughter.

Jisung spotted a hill and grinned, a mischievous idea forming. "Race you to the top!" he shouted, taking off before Minho could respond. The older laughed, surprise sparking his energy as he chased after his friend. They reached the top, breathless and giggling. The view was stunning, the city sprawling below them. "See? Isn't this great?" Jisung asked, flopping down on the grass. Minho lay next to him, looking out at the skyline. "Yeah, it really is."

Jisung turned to Minho, "I've got one last surprise for you. Follow me!" He led Minho to a lookout point where the sun was beginning to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink hazed over my the clouds. It was a moment of pure beauty, and Minho was captivated. "Wow, this is amazing," he breathed, feeling a warmth spread through him.

Who needed some guy when he had the whole world in front of him? Minho reached his hand out so that he could hold Jisung's, needing someone to feel how he was feeling. Jisung squeezed their intertwined hands and said nothing, just allowed them to bask in the beauty of nature before them.

After a while, Jisung turned to look  at Minho, "I have one last thing actually. Honestly, I've been saving this for a long time because I was nervous into his backpack and pulled out a small gift, wrapped in a soft pink paper. Minho hesitated, then unwrapped the gift to reveal a simple necklace with a Polaris star charm. "Jisung, this is so beautiful... but why for me?"

"I wanted you to have something special to remind you how bright you shine, even on the cloudy days," Jisung said, his expression sincere, "I know today didn't go as planned, but I hope I could make it a little better." Minho felt a rush of warmth, realizing how much effort Jisung had put into making him happy. "Thank you, Sungie. This really means a lot." Jisung gingerly pulled the silver chain from the box and held it up, confidence waning, "Can I- um ... can I put it on for you?"

Minho nodded and faced his back towards Jisung so he could clasp the necklace. Jisung stepped forward and put his arms around Minho's neck, his fingers brushing the soft skin. Minho felt a blush rise to his face and he couldn't understand why. He and Jisung had been friends for years, so why was his heart beating so fast right now? Or had he been so oblivious to the love he had for his friend that he classified their relationship as the wrong type of love? The friendly kind instead of the romantic kind?

Jisung sat down on the ground and patted the space next to him as an invitation for Minho to sit next to him. Jisung rested his head on Minho's shoulder as they sat together, watching the sun disappear below the horizon. In that moment, Minho realized something so profound that it felt painfully obvious. He had been so focused on his original plans that he hadn't seen what was right in front of him. Jisung, with his unwavering support and care, was exactly what he needed. "Hey, Sungie?" he said, turning to his friend, his heart racing slightly. "Yeah?"

"I just realized... I think I would have rather been with you all along," Minho confessed, his cheeks flushing. Jisung's eyes widened, a bright smile breaking across his face. "Really?"

"Yeah," Minho said, a genuine smile breaking across his face, "I just wanted to thank you for today. You really made it special." As the last light faded, they shared a moment of comfortable silence, the bond between them stronger than ever. It felt so right, like it was meant to be. Minho wanted find the guy who stood him up and give him a gold star because without him, none of today would've happened.

"Want to grab dinner?" Minho suggested. "Absolutely," Jisung replied, his heart full, and admittedly, stomach empty. As they walked side by side, ready for the next adventure, Minho couldn't shake the feeling that this Valentine's Day had turned into something truly special—just the two of them, together.

In that moment, Minho knew he wouldn't trade this day for anything in the world.
