Chapter 24

"Do you want to know what offer he made me back then?" Mix now asked Boun.

" Tell me, I want to hear everything...." said Boun in a trembling voice, for he now had tears in his eyes.

"Prem told me then that if I gave him command of the entire Red Dragon gang, he would make sure that what happened in the gang shootout would never happen again. He told me about his family and what the mafia had done to him and he came up with a plan to rid the city of the scum. He also told me he'd make sure the Black Viper gang disappeared completely and stopped the illegal trade. He talked me out of your murder and helped me get over my husband's death. Prem has been an incredible example and support to me. He helped me adopt my son and gave me a new purpose in life. Everyone who worked in the Red Dragon Gang left the mafia world and were able to start their own families without worry, and their wives and husbands didn't have to worry about losing their precious halves. " Mix now paused in his narrative and looked at Boun to see if he was listening. For all the time he had been looking into the blue still water of the pool. Seeing that Boun hung his gaze on his lips, he continued: 

"Do you know why Prem calls himself Scorpion? " Mix now left the question hanging in the air.

" I have no idea, I thought it was a cool name for a gangster, but Prem never needed to be cool." Boun replied thoughtfully, stumbling as he was still on the verge of tears from Mix's story.

Mix just smiled, " No Prem never really needed to be a cool dangerous mobster. Scorpion is from the scorpion order and even though he has dangerous claws, he always attacks from behind. Prem never attacked directly, he always waited patiently and went around everything from behind and from a distance. But mostly he took the nickname because a scorpion survives everything, just like he survived his family's accident. Scorpions can survive radioactivity that would kill a human, can go a year without eating, and can hold their breath for three days. It is a very interesting and resilient animal, just as Prem is interesting and resilient. " explained Mix.

" Can I ask you a question? " wondered Boun.

"Ask," Mix nodded.

" You told me that Prem never lied to me, but when he was with me at the restaurant the other day, he was surprised to find out that I was the Noppanut who ran the gang. How come he didn't recognize me when he was planning to destroy my gang, he must have known who I was or lied about it?" Boun asked.

"Hmm yes, let me explain and quite simply."

" Prem was never interested in you as a person, just as numbers, dates. There's something to those jokes about IT technicians. Numbers and parts are sometimes bigger friends to them than people. Also, after the accident, when he woke up he let go of everything wrong, he didn't seek revenge, he just wanted to make things right and made it a point not to let the mafia ruin another innocent life. He didn't care who you were, young or old, and he certainly didn't care what your face looked like. It may seem strange to you, but he never cared about your face. He didn't need to know it. His plan was to gradually force you out of business, a gradual plan over several years. But then you met. 

Your meeting at that club was a once-in-a-lifetime coincidence, and sometimes not even that. Prem doesn't drink much alcohol and doesn't smoke except when he's nervous. The day he went to your club he was drinking the death of his family, it was the day of their anniversary of their death and he does it every year. He chose your bar that year, thought it was so symbolic, and you ran into him there. You don't know how he blamed himself, he got so drunk the night you met at that bar that he had to go rinse his face and neck and his choke patch got wet and he didn't have a spare. He wanted to finish his drink and leave, but before he could do that, you came in. He noticed your tattoo and tried to get away from you when he found out you were part of the gang he was trying to take out. But you came into his office the next day and blackmailed him with his friend's life. By the way, Fluke has no idea what kind of second life Prem leads. He says he's a very nice guy who couldn't take it. Prem really likes him a lot, and he said he'd let you stay a few days and see where you go before he intervenes.

He didn't want him to give himself away. His plan was already in full swing and he was afraid it would all go wrong if the Red Dragon Gang started threatening you to leave Prem and Fluke behind. You'd certainly get suspicious if his bodyguards suddenly showed up behind Prem. Plus, you figured he might get closer to your gang. He also thought you'd get tired of him soon enough, and then when he sensed a threat from you, he'd intervene.
