The trio traveled swiftly through the moonlit forest, the dense trees casting eerie shadows as they approached the palace. Upon arrival, they were greeted by Freidrick, who awaited them with a serious expression.
"Welcome back, my kings," he said, nodding to Thaddeus, Lysander, and Zephyr. "We have much to discuss."
As they entered the palace, Freidrick wasted no time. "There are troubling rumors among the humans. A dark witch has surfaced, and though the rebellious faction is minimal, they remain a threat. Most have been imprisoned, but we need to keep our guard up."
Zephyr's crimson eyes narrowed, his thoughts racing. "And this witch? What have you learned?"
"Some reports indicate that she's been seen near the river where you found Anastasia," Freidrick continued. "That river has been a focal point of dark energy lately. We suspect she may be linked to whatever is stirring in the water."
Thaddeus clenched his fists, frustration boiling beneath the surface. "We can't allow anything to jeopardize Anastasia. We need to ensure that the way is clear for her and her family."
"Indeed," Freidrick replied, leading them deeper into the palace. "Even with the blessings of the white witches and the most powerful warlocks, we must be vigilant."
As they reached the locked door, the atmosphere thickened with tension. Zephyr took a deep breath and stepped inside, revealing a dimly lit chamber where Anastasia's father sat with his back to them.
"I don't want to eat. Please, just let me go," Kaelan's voice echoed in the silence, laced with desperation.
Thaddeus's deep voice resonated in the room, startling him. "So you're rebelling against the thought of eating now?"
Kaelan turned, confusion etched on his face. "YOU! Let me go, why have you locked me here?"
"We're only keeping you here for your own safety," Zephyr said, stepping closer. "You are the father of our mate."
"Enough," Thaddeus snapped, a warning in his tone. "Do you want to know what happened to your family?"
Kaelan's eyes widened with hope. "You found them? Are they safe? Where are they? Please, take me to them!"
Zephyr's expression darkened, his voice cold. "Now, now, didn't we promise you that we wouldn't let you know? We thought you might enjoy the tension of uncertainty."
"Please! Let me meet them! Please!" Kaelan's voice rose, panic flooding his features as he reached out toward them.
As they turned to leave, his pleas echoed in the air. "Please! Let me go! I need to see them!"
Dashiell, trailing behind, glanced at Zephyr, his voice low. "Are we really not letting him meet his family?"
Zephyr rolled his eyes, a hint of irritation flashing across his face. "Tsk tsk. We're not heartless, Dashiell. But this is his punishment. Let him wallow in anxiety like we did when he kept us from our mate."
"Do you really think this will help?" Dashiell asked, concern creeping into his voice.
"Perhaps not," Zephyr conceded, "but it's a small price for him to pay for the pain he caused. We'll make sure he has time to reflect on his choices."
Thaddeus nodded in agreement. "We need to focus on getting Anastasia and her family here safely. Everything else can wait."
As they left the chamber, Kaelan's anguished cries faded into the distance. Outside, the moon hung low, its silvery light casting long shadows over the grounds. The air was thick with a sense of impending conflict, and the mention of the dark witch weighed heavily on them.
"We need to investigate the river," Lysander said, his voice resolute. "If something is amiss there, we can't risk bringing Anastasia and her family into danger."
"We should also reinforce the palace defenses," Thaddeus added. "We can't underestimate the possibility of an attack from either the rebels or this witch."
Freidrick joined them, his expression grim. "I've already begun reinforcing the wards. But we need to be proactive. If she's indeed linked to the river, we need to confront whatever darkness is brewing there."
With their minds set on the task ahead, the trio made their way to the palace grounds, ready to uncover the truth behind the river and protect their future. The path was fraught with peril, but they were determined to shield their mate and her family from whatever dark forces lurked in the shadows.
As they prepared for their investigation, Zephyr couldn't shake the feeling that the time for reckoning was drawing near. Secrets had been buried in the depths of the river, and he knew they were about to surface, unveiling a darkness that could threaten everything they held dear.
