As the vibrancy of the kings' realm enveloped them, Elowen felt a bittersweet tension settle in her heart. The breathtaking beauty around her contrasted starkly with the turmoil she carried inside. While the kings assured her of safety, a nagging thought lingered: Kaelan was still out there, somewhere in the shadows, alone.
Anastasia, momentarily captivated by the fluttering lights of the enchanted realm, laughed and twirled, her fears momentarily forgotten. Zephyr watched her with a mix of admiration and concern, his imposing presence softened as he observed the girl's innocent joy.
"Look at her," he murmured, a rare warmth in his voice. "She is the light we must protect."
"Indeed," Oberon replied, his emerald eyes gleaming with a mixture of pride and worry. "But the darkness is relentless. We must not underestimate it."
Elowen, however, couldn't shake the feeling that there was something more the kings weren't sharing. They had moved quickly, their actions calculated. Had they known something about Kaelan that they hadn't revealed? The thought sent a chill through her.
As they settled into a glade surrounded by towering trees, Dashiell took a watchful stance at the perimeter. The others began to discuss their next steps, voices low but intense.
"We need to send a scout back," Thaddeus suggested, running a hand through his chestnut waves. "We can gather more information about the forces gathering against us."
"Agreed," Oberon nodded. "But we must keep Elowen and the children hidden until we know it's safe. We cannot risk losing them again."
Elowen clenched her fists, an unsettling realization washing over her. "You speak as if you're certain he'll be in danger. Why not send someone to find Kaelan?"
The kings exchanged looks, their expressions unreadable. Finally, Zephyr stepped forward, his crimson gaze steady. "Elowen, the situation is more complex than it seems. We have...secured your husband."
"What do you mean, 'secured'?" Elowen's voice trembled with disbelief. "Where is he? Is he safe?"
"We have him in the palace," Dashiell replied, his tone measured. "He's being kept under guard until we can ensure the safety of you and your children."
Elowen's heart raced. "You're keeping him there against his will?"
"It's for his protection," Thaddeus interjected, his forest-green eyes earnest. "We feared that if you were aware he was safe, you might flee again—take Anastasia away with you."
Anastasia, who had been playing with a glowing flower, paused, looking up at her mother. "Mommy? Is Daddy okay?"
Elowen knelt beside her, forcing a smile despite the turmoil inside. "Yes, sweetheart. Daddy is okay." But the lie felt heavy on her tongue.
The kings watched them, their expressions a mix of concern and understanding. "We did not want to create more uncertainty," Oberon continued gently. "We believed that if you thought he was still in danger, you would remain with us."
"But I want my family together," Elowen insisted, rising to her feet. "You've kept him from me. How can I trust you?"
"Trust takes time," Zephyr said, his tone softening. "But we are on your side. We understand the bond you share, and we want to protect it."
"Then let me see him," Elowen demanded, her resolve hardening. "If he's safe, I need to know for myself."
The kings exchanged another glance, this time with a hint of hesitation. "It's not that simple," Dashiell replied slowly. "The palace is under threat. We cannot risk exposing you or your children to danger."
"Then what am I supposed to do?" Elowen's voice rose, frustration bubbling to the surface. "Stay here in a beautiful cage while my husband is—wherever he is—alone and thinking I abandoned him?"
Amias stepped forward, his ocean blue eyes filled with empathy. "We will find a way, Elowen. We promise. But first, you must understand that your safety—and that of your children—must come first. We need to regroup, and we need time."
Anastasia looked between her mother and the kings, sensing the tension in the air. "Mommy, it's okay. We're safe here, right?"
Elowen knelt and hugged her daughter tightly, feeling the warmth of Anastasia's little body grounding her. "Yes, sweetheart. We are safe."
But as she held her daughter, Elowen couldn't shake the feeling that the kings' intentions, however noble, were shrouded in secrets. She felt a deep-rooted instinct urging her to act, to break through the layers of uncertainty that surrounded her family.
"Very well," she said, her voice steadying. "But I want to see Kaelan. I will not stay here without knowing the truth. I want to see him safe, and then we can decide how to move forward."
The kings glanced at one another, and Elowen could see the weight of her request settle heavily in the air. Finally, Oberon nodded, his expression solemn. "We will find a way, Elowen. But you must promise us that you will not act rashly. The shadows are still lurking, and we cannot afford to expose ourselves before we are ready."
Elowen met his gaze, determination flaring within her. "I promise, but only if you keep your word."
As the kings began to strategize, Elowen felt a renewed sense of purpose. The shadows may be closing in, but she would not allow fear to bind her. She would find Kaelan, and together, they would stand against the darkness threatening their family.
With a flicker of hope igniting in her heart, Elowen vowed to face whatever lay ahead—no matter the cost.
