All eyes turned toward Amias, who exclaimed, "WHAT!? I just want to know, where is our mate and what is she? What if it is a HE!? Is it possible? Even if it is a he, I have waited too long. All these people can't sate my hunger; I just need my mate, just one taste." He licked his lips, his ocean blue eyes swirling with a dark intensity.
Zephyr, massaging his head with a growing headache, responded, "Amias, it is a she, and you won't be getting a taste any time soon." Amias's eyes darkened further as he challenged, "Who the fuck are you to decide that?" Everyone turned their gaze to Zephyr, seeking an explanation.
Oberon, who had remained silent until now, spoke slowly, "There is something you aren't telling us." It wasn't a question; Oberon already sensed that Zephyr had withheld information. Zephyr sighed, realizing he had to reveal the hidden truth. "Our mate doesn't have magic," he admitted. Silence followed his words. "She is a human."
The revelation hung heavy in the air. None of them knew how to process this unexpected information. The last recorded instance of a human mate occurred around 500 years ago, and it ended in tragedy. The humans at that time, unable to accept the love between different species, killed the human mate. In response, her partner, the most powerful warlock of that era, created a new world for supernaturals, accessible only through magic. Heartbroken, the warlock succumbed to grief, leading to a violent conflict with humans. To prevent further harm, the reigning king had to execute the warlock.
The news Zephyr just disclosed was about to reshape their lives in ways they hadn't anticipated. The prospect of having a human mate brought with it a history of pain and prejudice. How they navigated this revelation would determine the fate of their newfound connection and the delicate balance between supernatural beings and humans.
Dashiell's voice echoed through the room, cutting through the heavy silence. "It doesn't matter. We already have humans under our control. What happened to that warlock before won't happen to us. We are more powerful. We are the most powerful bunch, and we will protect her."
Oberon, the observant fae, commented silently again, "There is something else you aren't telling." In response, Amias glared at Zephyr and demanded, "Tell me why I can't taste my mate. You know once I found her, anyone else won't be able to sate my hunger." All eyes turned towards Zephyr, waiting for an explanation.
Zephyr turned and grunted, "Because she is a 7-year-old kid." A wave of surprise washed over them. He added silently, "And she is coming here tomorrow..." The weight of the revelation settled in the room, leaving them to contemplate the unforeseen challenges and responsibilities that lay ahead with the arrival of their young, human mate.
"We are so fucked."
